software application list on Linux distributions
« on: September 14, 2007, 12:09:06 PM »
Hi All,
can somebody please post a list of open source ( free to use) software,
that is simular to use like great Windows applications ?

Like a good paint program,
a great office suite,
some great CAD tools,
some good 3D render programs,
some nice technical simulation programs,
etc...
I had seen somewhere a list, where they had compiled a list of
"compatible" software under linux for the most prominent and used
software used under Windows, but I don?t find this list anymore.
Would be great to have simular applications also under the Linux
distribution.

Thanks.
Regards, Stefan.

Check out this VLC media player  :D

"VideoLAN is free software and provided free of charge; besides, it is not backed by any large company, and developers are mostly volunteers. As such, user support is provided by the VideoLAN users and developers community on a voluntary basis.

However, you can find many resources and informations on how to get support and help for VideoLAN software. We will do our best."

Hi Stephan, I'll take a stab at this. :D

Like a good paint program,

Gimp  --  as fully functional as Photoshop, and just as hard to learn

a great office suite,

Openoffice  --  It deals with M$ office format documents and XML formats too.

some great CAD tools,

Qcad  --  nice program, steep learning curve.

some good 3D render programs,
some nice technical simulation programs,

Phun and Dia diagram editor.

etc...
I had seen somewhere a list, where they had compiled a list of
"compatible" software under linux for the most prominent and used
software used under Windows, but I don?t find this list anymore.

Thank you sir.

Open source is a very nice thing and you are supporting it.
