Arduous Continuous Left-Right Scrolling
« on: May 07, 2010, 08:08:36 AM »
I have found the endless scrolling left to right in FireFox and IE
annoying when a single picture is to big on that page.

But lately a new problem has cropped up
in all browser makers/versions I use.

Look at the below two pics.

They are the left,
then the right.

Why is this happening ?

It is a new,
and happens on all my machines.

So I would like to feel I can rule out
a machine/OS/Browser specific problem.

The title line is repeated needlessly...

I have the same problems, the pictures are aligned on the right side of the text, making the pages exrtemely wide an hard to oversea.

And why that strange upload system, why can we not just add also the pictures as a HTML adress ?

Does anyone have a solution to stop
these forum pages from loading so wide?

It makes them unreadable for the most part.

Having to scroll left to right
for every single written line
is as the title clearly indicates,
Arduous...

It started with big pictures,
but now even text only pages
can be ubber-wide now too.

Stefan's suggestion of FireFox was a good one,
I do like it better than Internet Destroyer
and a few others I have too.

But even IE's versions that support
"Auto-Resize" of pictures fail to correct
the large picture pages from sprawling.

Do I need a script blocker to stop this?

Thanks for any assistance

Except for the under-score line being in the wrong place, which is
probably a browser mathematics problem, there really is no solution
currently. The problem is that these Web pages need to fit on both
cell phone screens all the way up to those folks that can afford to
run two or three LCD screens side by side as their system monitor.
The Web Site BBS software starts out at a normal low width but then
picture graphics causes the posts to widen out. You can see threads
that start off narrow then pictures start expanding the thread width.
Finally, the BBS software can't take anymore width and begins adding
secondary scroll bars to keep the graphics within limits. The person making
these posts may not even be aware that someone out there is already
using the primary image scroll bars. Usually these kinds of problems go
away with time, but for now it's a problem. My recommendation is simply
to point out to people to limit the screen width of their post. Especially
to limit their attached graphics size. These graphics don't really need
to as big as they are, usually. You might research ways they can reduce
the image sizes, so they can see all of this in one place. With any enforced
script changes one risks downgrading and compatibility issues in the (near)
future.

With all respect,

I visit a lot of websites, fora's and a likes, and its a little bit worse over here (lay out concerned)

So it is possible, but i can also understand it would be expensive to have a script rewritten or something.

I have been hacking away at this page's
source code for a few hours for fun.

Removing the entire head section,
various advertiser scripts,
the entire left and bottom frames,
and many other needless scripts.

Sure loads fast now ... :)

So far it looks like it is just the underline call.

the problem goes away when I remove that tag.

I mean it stops the error in FireFox, Opera, and IE.

Please note,
it is a SECOND line,
the first is just fine.

Eliminating the underline call
kills BOTH lines though ... lol.

I agree (Mark) that the range of viewer equipment we all use
in this day and age calls for BB code that has cosiderably more
compatibility issues than yest'r-year.

But that this forums SMF and plugins and PortaMx allows pics that big
is most likely a controlable/limitable variable by the X/Y pixal count.

I know the attachment size is controlable as example,
there is a thread here about it, and It's size's evolution.

But I'd rather see the pics inset into their own insert,
with scrollable bars for JUST those oversized pics.

As opposed to having to arduously scroll
miles of text line by line on each page instead.

That way schematics and so forth
would fully retain readablility.  :)

Resize plugins usually bastardize them.

In the areas that I am a moderator, I have found that when this happens I simply download my own copy of the oversized photo, delete the photo as posted by the poster, and then re-size the photo to correct proportions and then upload it back to the poster's post.

This seems to correct the wide screen that happens after a large photo.  It is a little time consuming and I don't always have time to catch the problem and fix it, but I try to do it when I can.  I only have moderator powers on a few topics that allows me to do this.

The cool thing is, once I have done this, no one can tell anything has changed except for the wide page is gone.

@pirate88179;

Thanks then...For all you effort.  :)
I like this idea. "Is it automatable?"

@All

I did some more research and found that the widest image on the
downloaded .html page sets the width for the entire page. Not from
the beginning of the thread. The browser scrolls through that page
image on the local machine. But there are sure is a range of primary
scroll bar sizes. From just losing the ads on the left, which act as a
buffer, to fully displaying only 1/2 the actual page. I think you may
have it Compu-Tutor, in the precalcs don't let the image change the page
width too much...But scroll through whole image on the subframe scroll
bars. I my belief though I haven't looked at this at all from the standpoint
of a coder, is that all run-on text is just text...I doubt that text itself
can set page width...though I did see a run-on url link that might have.

Yes, TY from all of us Bill for the effort.

I did some more research and found that the widest image on the
downloaded .html page sets the width for the entire page. Not from
the beginning of the thread.

That is what I noticed too.

but lately pages without pics
are starting this stuff too.

Although standard text will wrap normally.

if the sentence has certain characters in it,
like common URL operators it won't it seems.

If anyone reading this doesn't see a second line
under the main one in my first post at the top
below the date "May 07, 2010, 08:08:36 AM",
please tell me "what version of what" your using.

It will look like my second picture
when you scroll to the right and look.

I wonder if Micro$hafts "Updates" hosed me...

Thanks guys, I appreciate that.

I am no programmer by any means but it seems to me to be an easy thing to have a block on photos that do not meet the correct format when someone is attempting to upload them.  Would this not be easy?  Or, is it not available in this forum software?

I have been on other sites where you get an error message when trying to upload a non-conforming photo like "please re-size your picture to the proper format" or words to that effect.

Now, as far as it doing the same thing with just words, I have not seen that yet but I will take your word for it.

I am using the latest version of Firefox over here.

I've certainly noticed tons of odd stuff lately,
but I posted this one due to it making the forum unusable.

Here is another example of odd behaviour.

I'll post the recent topics list first,
then what appears to be a database hick-up.

Two identical threads except for line spacing,
and additional path on the URL.

Like it was an edit gone wrong somehow.

Sure hope Stefan isn't loosing the database !  :(

Attached Pictures:
1st - "Recent Posts" List - May 10, 2010, 04:24:29 AM
2nd - Topic #9157
3rd - Topic #9158

I tried 800x600 first,
but reduced to 640x480.

The originals are of course 1024x768.

Very odd ...

Has anyone found a solution?

There are no pics on this example,
the word wrap is not doing It's job.

And now there is a wide space
between the names and the text.

At 1024x768, it is still five pages wide!

Here is another example:

http://www.overunity.com/index.php?topic=9230.msg242948#msg242948

After I scroll down past the text of this post
I have to hit "Page down" 19 times
to get past the blank space.

I'll spare everyone 19 empty pics.

I'm using the newest FireFox
per Stefan's suggestion.

Micro$haft's Internet Destroyer does this too...
