If you look into the matter more you will find that about 70% of the US's ground beef product have been "cleaned" with ammonia.  This started back a few years ago when they found that low amounts of ammonia in beef really can not be detected by the consumer, MacDonalds was the first I believe to start using it.  When it became cheaper BurgerKing, Windys, Carles Jr. and other chain fast foods followed suit.  The original reason ammonia was put in the beef was to kill ecoil.  More recent studies have shown that they do not put enough ammonia in the beef to kill all of the ecoil bacteria, thus making it another chemical American consumers put in their bodies.

USDA vs Food processing  ..it would be nice; they're destroying how Americans smell food.

Trying to create vegetarianism?  ..or are they just trying to bolster a soy product.

The food industry as a whole does not want you to be a vegian.  They are trying to make the quickest and cheapest dollar.  So if it means making everything out of corn, they do because corn is cheap.  if it means mixing your meat with ammonia they will because being careful during the processing of the meat is hard and costly, it is much quicker and cheaper to mix it with ammonia.  Anyone in the food industry will tell you that you make your vote with your dollar.

I got a burger the other day that smelled like it; ...I've been ill ever since.

Unfortunately, it didn't cure my bad breath.

If you really want to see what food in the US and other developed countries are going to you should watch Food Inc. take it only for face value.  A lot of information is thrown at you in the movie, and so are some bs "facts".  It does however show you what our "food" industry is headed to.

I think the ultimate goal is to get you to buy sluge, like that in the matrix.  They can synteticly create it now.  at a fraction of the price that it would cost them to grow food.
