Title: Mild Hybrid to Mild EV conversion

Messing around with some 2500F ultracapacitors that GM was using for testing.  Trying to organize my thoughts if anyone can help.  (BTW studying/planning probably a year before doing anything).  2008 Vue Hybrid with 14.5KW electric "assist". 


Plug>>Charger>>LifePO4(or similar)>>UltraCAP>>Hybrid Engine
                                               >>Built-In NIMH

Basically trying to have grid electricity on the LifePO4 batteries.  These may or may not be necessary, the Ultracaps may be all I need.  I'm also wanting the engine power to go into and come from the capacitors instead of the batteries directly.  Somehow need to figure out how to get it to "assist" more and especially from stop.  Hoping I can get all electric up to at least 5mph.

Im not sure on your car, but adding more current capability may not be the answer to your idea. The controller will determine the current sent to the motor. If the motor can handle more power, to increase it as much as you seek, it seems reasonable. But I might search to see if there are programming options. Adding more to the batteries will last longer per charge.

Current limitation is on charging and getting energy from the batteries.  Buy charging and getting energy from the ultracapacitors that will effectively bypass the limit and give much more available to "bursts".  The energy going into the batteries from the ultracpaps would be more even.  Plus be able to more effectively take charge from regenerative braking.  The next limit I can see is even though that motor is 14.5KW it has a 200Amp fuse which only gives access to half that amount.  That would however require thicker gauge cable to even be safe though.

AFS Trinity was able to get 150MPG using ultracaps and charging on the a modified 2007 so I know 40-50MPG would be easily doable.

I took a look at AFS Trinity, they have added a AFST control box to the deal. That would be the extra ingredient to allow for integration of the ultra cap bank they add.

If you scroll down to where they show the skeletal view of the vehicle, It shows the AFST box added. It must be a bypass, as you suggested.

Without the new controller, you may only expect more electric only time due to the constraints of the on board stock controller, and possibly better mileage.
Like a golf cart, if you upgrade the controller, you can get more juice to the motor.  Im not trying to discourage you in your project. =]

Am also talking with Jet about an ECU programmer.  Not sure if it would give me access to the hybrid system or not.

That sounds like a possible alternative. The ecu should give guidance to most controls. Just like any other car, a lil adjustment can make a nice improvement. And most things are under rated for normal use, so there may be something for you there.
