New magnet motor with plate separation!
« on: April 28, 2009, 07:40:48 AM »
Hello forum,

This design has been influenced by Butch Lafonte's efforts and a design by Yucca.  It incorporates a phenomenon where plates will separate when like-oriented flux is flowing through them, like how iron filings form field lines instead of clumps around the poles of a magnet on a piece of paper.

By having sets of plates 'hanging' (stator) with one side pinned (but allows movement on the other side) and the furthest plate away from the rotor as well, magnets will cause the plates to separate, pushing a rod on the rotor ratchet.  The rotor itself is a ratchet design, so more than one 'stroke' can occur with each set.  Plates in the 'non-influenced' state will fall to a collapsed position, where the rod will reset itself on the ratchet.  The ratchet and the top and bottom magnets are connected, and the stator plates are connected to a separate structure.  There can be multiple sets of magnets at different angles, allowing more strokes per revolution.

Also, the design has the plates closer to each other, lowering the air gap to allow the flux to pass through the flux 'hills' and 'wells' easily.

I'm hoping someone won't find a fallacy in my reasoning, but I'm 99% sure there will be one...  I'm hoping rational people like Vidar can take a look!  The first picture is a cross-section of the side of the motor, and the second picture is a top view with similar cutaways.

Thanks,
Blain

the first initial issues i see with this concept is the actual mechanical energy stored in the hanging stators

its one thing to make the stators move their own weight, but adding a load might prove to be too much

plus you would be creating magnetic field through which the magnets would have to pass through, adding more resistance

in addition to the friction and resistance (obviously) in the rotating magnet mechanism itself, plus the weight of said mechanism, in addition to the weight itself of the stators

im not sure by insight whether an increased weight in the stators would increase effectiveness or not, im sure there is an "equilibrium" that would be reached between weight and force behind it, but i would imagine it would be similar

if the movement of the stators is able to overcome all these, then it could work

see how much force you can generate from a set up of a single stator and magnet set up

this will give you a ballpark of how much energy your dealing with

all i can think about right now, i love the originality of the concept, never thought of anything like that before

hope i could be of use

until next time

Hmm, good thinking with the amount of load the plates can push against the rotor 'ratchet' with.  When I had played with the concept, they repelled off each other quite strongly and this was only with ceramic mags...  The reduced air gap between sets of plates is to allow smoother passage from each set of plates...  Maybe with 'wider' (as in covering more than one set of plates at a time) magnets, this can be smoother as well.

Not sure, but I really wish I had some stuff to do some measurements.  I am also thinking by having one side 'pinned', twice the force repelling would go towards the 'open' part of the plates?  Maybe not, it probably would just push against the stationary holder...

Thanks for the input!

In addition, here's another image with longer rotor magnets...  Maybe for smoother transitions?
