Need some advice on alternator coil wiring
« on: April 27, 2009, 08:46:25 PM »
I'm working on a setup that's a variation of the old "motor connected to a generator" idea but I don't think this approach has been tried.  I've known the basics of electromagnets, motors, and generators since I was in primary school but I've never built an alternator from scratch and I could use a little help on that component.  I'm looking at rigging up 9 compact coils in groups of 3, simple enough, but I'm not clear on how I'm going to wire them together.  I've been reading up on 3 phase delta and star configurations but they all end up with a 3rd output wire and I don't know what I'd do with that.  I'd like to just wire 3 coils in series per group and then wire the groups in parallel.  Will that work like I think it should?  Anything wrong I should be aware of, or if you know how to run 3 output wires into an AC motor with 2 connections I wouldn't mind knowing that too.  Thanks.

Your motor is AC or DC?

The schematics that nievesoliveras  posted would run a DC motor I think. The output without rectification would be AC, just series/parallel your coils to get the required voltage.

Take care,

Michel

If AC is your desired out put, then maybe you could use a wave winding style rather than coils and go with single phase rather than three phase?
