Yes, the fanner elements open due to repulsion. The principle has been used in industry for 75 years or more to seperate sheet steel.
See our Youtube web site (lafonte group) for several videos of this principle. How they are moved back together when the repulsion is no longer present after moving past to the next element set can be done many different ways.

Notice that as the stator magnets fan open the fanner elements, the flat surface of the up coming closed fanner elements set is exp[osed to the magnetic field and pulled to the stator field. When the magnet is centered across the set, the elements are allowed to open and the cycle repeats.

I'm a little confused......from what i have seen ..all fanner set-ups have only attraction to the stack? more attraction when open and less when closed?
this is shown in your video..

In this setup the magnets do not move into open air, they move to the next CLOSED set of elements. That is why the name Pseudo Solid, they appear to the magnets to be a solid piece of metal and are attracted to the now exposed face. Half way across the closed set the elements are allowed to open and the sequence starts again.
