Keep in-mind there are two major types of CRT monitors.

The majority use a shadow mask. Trinitrons and similar have no shadow mask. The shadow mask is basically a thin ferrous screen or plate that will show you patterns like the text books teach. These patterns are strongly affected by the shadow mask.

The others show fields pretty close to their undisturbed state, completely different than the text books teach.
