GOOGLE  ;D

I also read that they exist in lantern batteries, but I don't think you would want to crack open one of those.

Yeah, I have seen that website. Really? Can I find them in lantern batteries?

this is normally carbon.
they are all
Zinc-carbon batteries.
The center rood ist this what you search.

cou can also open alcaline batteries.
it is more material in because as an ring pessed to the inside of the conzainer.
ce center electrode is here an smal zinc-road.

pls google first out the material do see exactly waht it is.

Ebay. In "Business and Industrial". They are used as welding rods for gauging material
out. Also, as people have mentioned above, batteries. Old U2 batteries have one
down the middle, but you will have some nasty Sulphuric Acid gel to deal with.

yes there are actually 4 single cells in just cut around the top of this plastic box and pry it open ( sometimes it works if you hit the batterie on the top agaainst the edge of a table and then pry it open with a screw driver) the single cells are just connected with a piece of wire. then carefully bend the edges of the zinc outer hull to the outside till the black plastic washer is free all the way around then take a pair of plier and twiste the brass cap a bit to both sides and pull carefully this way you have a nice carbon rod with allready the contact on it.
I used them in my old saltwater cells.

Graphite rods can be purchased from jeweler supplies, like Reo-Grand.

For my experiments in the earth batteries topic, I purchased mine from a company called Airgas.  They have a local outlet here in Kentucky in my town but they had to order mine.  I bought a carbon rod 1" dia. x 18" long for $20 us.  These are used in the welding industry for cutting rods.  They are not used much anymore and are rarely in stock but they still make them.  they are not coated and are 100% carbon.  I hope this helps.

But ... all this is CARBON.

If you look for "pure grafit"

You find this  easy .
Look Wikipedia.

technically its an allotrope of carbon, like diamonds are. But realistically i don't think there is any benefit of using carbon in its elemental form over graphite so either would be acceptable

hope you didnt think i was correcting you. merely trying to help pese in understanding the difference/similarities in what he was describing.

Further to that if you actually buy some pencils, preferably proper artists graphite pencils rather than your standard HB then you will actually have some high quality graphite rods, however getting the "lead" out of the penicl in one piece is another story, but i belive you can purchase the type where you can refill the pencil with seperate lead.

@ Gestalt0:

Not at all.  Well, actually, you did correct my statement which was proper to do.  My answer was an oversimplification and yours is the better answer.

My carbon rod is still going strong after being in the ground for about a year.  I pulled it up about 3 months ago and cleaned it off, no sign of any breaking down of the material. (I am using these in my earth battery experiments.)

You are right about the pencils.  At first, the only carbon I could find that was decent was inside carpenters pencils.  Not too hard to remove as these pencils are flat.

Here are some pics of my carbon rod.  About $20.00 US.
