First things first. Forget about eddy currents until you have a working design. Eddy currents will take some time to degrade neo magnets, or have be at high levels to be a problem.
Compared to getting a magnet motor to even work in the first place, mitigating eddy currents will probably seem easy.

When designing a magnet motor, try to think outside the box.  Pure repulsion (circles of repelling magnets) has been done to death, and I have yet to see such a design work. All the easy things have already been tried.
Your best bet will be to look for a magnetic effect to exploit, like using a tiny magnet to influence a much larger one, or knowing that repulsion isn't necessarily instant, and takes a small amount of time to build up.  There are also thermal and dimensional aspects to magnetism, so plenty of avenues to explore. Don't "expect" success, as people much smarter than you or I, haven't always succeeded. Consider success a bonus...the journey is the reward.

You all are right, I need to actually try it first before moving on to more questions.  (I tend to think 7 steps ahead of where I'm at.)  I should have my drum built this week or next, then I'll give my duel-array idea a whirl and see what happens.

At the very least I'll have a drum that I can play with. ;D  Thanks for the comments and advice.
