Zinc-Air Battery Open Forum
« on: September 05, 2008, 01:08:14 AM »
Zinc-Air Battery Open Forum (in Swedish).
Elbil.forum24.se is a Swedish/Scandinavian EV-Forum. Under the Topic "Lite av varje" and "Project Zink-Luftbatteri" you can follow the progress (with pictures). Username "Anders".

Need information how to make pure Colloidial Silver without producing Silver Oxide, with a Silver Generator (12 V DC), dest water and two Silver bars. The Silver-water will then be mixed with activated carbon, to be adsorbed, and then placed in the Air-Cathode to act as a catalyst between Oxygen from the air and the electrolyte water to create Hydroxide. More Silver in the activated carbon means improved catalyst and current.

An interesting battery chemistry.

For learning about some of the research being done here do a US patent search on Zinc Air + Rayovac.

Cheers!

Many thanks for the great info.
I would wish these infos would also be in english language
as Swedish does not translate well in Google translator.

Many thanks for the tip with the Silver colloid.
I already proposed this for fuel cells a while ago to
put it into graphite paper, but now you confirmed, that
it also works in Zinc air cells.
I will try it soon myself with my new battery cell.
Many thanks for posting this info here.
Regards, Stefan.

Zinc air very common within hearing aid batteries. They offer very good power production in a chemistry that isn't environmentally horrible like some others are. Most typical cell format for zinc air cells is the coin or button format. Obviously the ones used in hearing aid batteries are quite small in size like the 5A.

If you research the patents I mentioned, you will find that this chemistry can be scaled up in size to the AA (a common alkaline size format).

Building batteries in this chemistry is no easy feat but I suppose it could be done by someone serious about doing it.

My experience with this chemistry utilized zinc as the anode. Zinc was granual in form and treated with various enhancing materials. Electrolyte used was potassium hydroxide (KOH). Obviously the outer metallic casing of the cells had holes so air could interact with the cathode film. The cathode itself is the most complex aspect of this system which is why I said it is no easy thing to build.

Hope this helps. Rayovac US Patents gives a very large amount of detail regarding the chemistry and construction of these types of batteries. The main chemists listed on the patents (and two in particular) were very brilliant people.
