Title: OVERUNITY.COM LOGO CONTEST!
Post by: winner on August 06, 2008, 09:35:42 PM
All,

Webmaster Stefan Hartmann has given permission to begin a thread for an OverUnity.com logo contest!

I suggested this to Stefan and he agreed we could do this. Stefan is currently on vacation so he may not have time to spell out details. Still, for anyone with interest, why not start working on a logo design?

My vision for this was an eye-catching logo for the website header and a small 16x16 icon for web browser use ("favicon" or similar). Perhaps Stefan would agree to expanding the logo concept to include a design for the entire header.

I am willing to help coordinate some of this effort, as needed, however I will be on vacation next week as well with limited Internet access.

Everyone, it would be great to see your imaginative designs! While creating, please keep in mind the basics for good web graphics, as best you can: logo dimensions, browser compatibility, impact, simplicity, etc. And of course, we are looking for original ideas; no plagiarism!

I'll look to Stefan to provide any details and a deadline for this contest when he can, and as I stated, will assist with the contest if needed.

Stay tuned... Thanks Stefan!

This seems fun!

Here's my "off the cuff" submission.......

It was a nice 1/2 hr.

;D

Errrr...that last one was supposed to have a transparent background.

Duuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Good idea.

Here are some general guidelines for a logo design.

1) It should be compact.
2) It should be visible in large or very small format.
3) Not more then three colors.
4) It should look good with light or dark background.
5) It should be easy to have embroidered or printed on hats, caps, t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc.
6) It should convey the serious quest for free energy.
7) If there are white areas inside the logo, these should be marked as transparent unless the logo has a border.
8) If using standard text styles, you should identify the text style when you post your submission.

Don't draw an oil drilling rig with a big X on it. lol

Well, here's my first attempt, I'm not entirely happy with it, I will probably evolve it some more when I get time. The favicon could be just the OU part reduced down.

Dont forget its about the small 16x16 icon too, a big icon is fine but need the icon associated with it

That give me an idea for a small one, I will try one too today :)

@Yucca

Try stretching the VER more to the right past the NITY so you can put the .COM.

You can even put the COM so it is vertical, one letter on top of the other or sideways.

Nice logo though but don't forget the .COM because there could be some copyright issues if you only use OverUnity.

But I like the O and the U that could also be done as TheOne said in 16x16 as a favicon.

Look up "favicon" on Google. There are even some free programs or online icon programs.

Also, remove The Quest for Freedom as any such slogans are not part of the Logo and should be added separate to the actual Logo work afterwards.

Good work. Really nice top O loop like a rotor over the U that is like a stator.

Well my job is done, I made one icon 16x16 in pixel (version 1), the only way to get something write at this size is pixel art :)

What about the big logo too? Your job is only half done ;D  (nice 16x16 icon by the way!)

I will make a 16x16 favicon too, I am familiar with favicon concept, have made them for my own websites, my art package can save as .ico.

but they are always derived from my final large logo idea, so when I've settled on large icon, I will derive favicon.

@wattsup,

thanks for the feedback, I will try and get the .com in somehow and yes I'll remove the slogan, as you say slogans can be added later.

Howdy Y'all,

Here's an idea.  Make the letters in OverUnity.Com different devices that are chronicled here.  The "O" could be a Bessler Wheel.  The "V" could be a Jacobs Ladder.  The "i" could be a Tesla Coil.  The "U" and the "n" could be horseshoe magnets.  The little "o" could be a water wheel.  The "U" could be a HHO electrolyzer in a bucket.  The "m" could be an inductor in some sort of circuit around the perimeter.  It would take some graphic artistry and a high resolution logo to do it, but isn't this what OverUnity.com is all about?  All the various devices that are being explored here?

Blessed Be Brothers...

"O" could be a toroidal coil or TPU :)

Here is the trans versions with suggestions from watts.

The font is Century Schoolbook L Bold .

The colors have changed.

The 16x16 icon is actually 20X20 (but I could massage it into a smaller size (just didn't wanna ;) ).

Wonderful input here, Wattsup! Thanks!!! All of these are great guidlines! I highly recommend these as well.

Also I'd like to suggest the following:

9) Please feel free to contribute even if you don't have advanced graphics or webmaster skills. If you come up with a terrific design and there are some technical issues, there are plenty of people here who can help with technical corrections.

10) Let's not get too involved yet with the web icon. The 16x16 web icon, being so small, is quite challenging. The colors and general shape of the larger logo is usually all that can be captured, or maybe letters "O" and "U" might be all that we'll eventually use. In fact, as far as shaping contest rules, I wouldn't make it a contest requirement for everyone to create this little doohicky, since I think this will restrict the creative effort. Once a winning general logo is selected, we'll have some idea how this guy should look. [edit -->] Of course, if you want to pursue this as well, that's fine too.

I don't want to be rude but it ugly :)

Also title header should be "small in height" its cannot be used on a site because so many space is wasted in the page!

The small icon should be 16x16 (cannot be different then that), 32x32 can be used but its for desktop use only. Also the icon should say when you look at it what that mean.

Too late! (j/k ;) )

That happens when you go from gif to vector graphics and then back to gif.

Also title header should be "small in height" its cannot be used on a site because so many space is wasted in the page!

Graphics scaling is a wonnerful thing! It can be reworked, but I don't think it's worth the effort ATM.

The small icon should be 16x16 (cannot be different then that), 32x32 can be used but its for desktop use only. Also the icon should say when you look at it what that mean.

Ummm....say what?

I proposed mine, you'll propose yours, people will pick what they like best.

C'est pas?

New trys considering the watts criteria.......simple, easily recognized, +/- or N/S colors.

;D

@Yucca: Very good for a start!!!

@TheOne, exxcomm0n: Thanks! 16x16 artwork is like trying to dance in an empty beer barrel, huh?

@All: I think we can decide how to conduct this "contest" based on how things proceed here, and of course after discussing with Stefan. Perhaps a collaborative effort will produce a winner by general consensus or we'll have an official vote. On a side note, if anyone knows how to conduct a fair "vote" on a bulletin board, ensuring that people don't vote more than once, I'd like to hear how this is done.

Have fun everyone!

Make it a poll (as this site is equipped for it), then just tally votes cast as of a certain date.

But ask Stephan as he has ultimate veto powers. ;)

Yeah, I'm aware of the poll feature, just not sure if it disallows multiple submissions from one user, IP address, etc. Perhaps this will be sufficient, but I was just concerned about ballot stuffing.

...I think maybe someone should list some requirements as to sizes and where its going.

OK, here's a little more guidance with respect to the banner. The existing banner here is 151 pixels high (the space below H, R at top right and above the horizontal menu). For the web version of the *logo*, I recommend keeping in this ballpark for height, give or take, and a similar width as well. We need to be clear on the difference between logo and banner.

I could go into a lot more about this, but for now let's keep the above in mind and imagine a logo fitting in a similar height header.

For larger web presentations or posters the basic web logo could be embellished with more elements like lightning, finer details, etc. but we should have something that is visually clear in the 150-or-so pixel dimension for the header.

Graphics software (try IrfanView!) is great at dimensioning images. If you are starting out with something large, detailed, and spectactular, try scaling your image down to a 150 or so pixel height and see then what it looks like!  ;D

I'm not sure how Stefan feels about replacing the entire banner image (I think this glassy look is kinda cool myself), so for something on that scale we'll have to see what he says. I'm pretty sure he'd say "go for it," and I'd like to see some creative banners as well, so I don't see any harm in coming up with banner designs as well.

Hope this helps!

suitcases of useful papers and 2 tons of brick rubble.

...but we should have something that is visually clear in the 150-or-so pixel dimension for the header.

...Going a bit further, to minimize webmaster headache by just plopping a logo in the "glass block" area, we'd need a logo that looks reasonable at 80 pixels in height.

Bottom line: A clear logo at 80 pixels tall would be great.

Again, the easiest way to create logos is to start big, preferably with a vector graphics program, then reduce to 80 pixels and see if the design still works.

I would suggest a picture of a 1 litre car towing two caravans which contain two
suitcases of useful papers and 2 tons of brick rubble.

Hey, I don't see why we can't have some fun with this and generate some spoof logos and banners too. If we do indeed end up with a voting scenario, we'll just round up the serious entries.

Note that the bulletin board's banner is actually several sections put together in a horizontal line: the left glass block edge, the middle of the left glass block, the join area of the two blocks, the middle of the right glass block, and the right glass block edge. It is done this way so the middle block sections can stretch with the window.

I mention this only to point out that banner designs should allow for areas that can be stretched horizontally without destroying the image. A logo will be placed somewhere on top of the banner, so a good design would have open background space for this as well.

But I think it would be rather presumptuous of me to use such a "team" like that as my post footer as some might see me as equating myself to such free thinking individuals. ;)

But I think we should give homage to those who's ideas we work on so hard to crack or further.

Actually, freezers banner "gave" me the idea (it was more like stealing).

I could do some flipped  out 3d flash thingy. But I won't! This banner here has all the top players, men who have been forgotten in the pervasive glitz of ignorance, whose ideas and lives have been excluded from all academia. The same and main reason the educated world is so damn dumm.
Add Schauberger in this line up too.
They might have been misplaced in the past but they own the future. And we all here know this. Let's keep them alive for the childrens sake. And if there are to add I would like to throw in Bearden, Bedini, Dollard, Lindeman, Muller as modern day heroes.

Scratch the cartoons. They represent selfish interests. Put these men back on the billboard of progress and lets help rewrite history. Shall we? Lets do this right. Isn't that what we are here for? For these forgotten geniuses. Semper Fi.

I have an idea to tack along side the one below that may allow a good many pioneers to be showcased for the homage they deserve.

@ all

For a little glitz (as someone invoking GK early in thread was hoping for I bet), here's an animated gif I hacked up in GIMP (took me all afternoon).

It's not as pretty, and pretty chunky @ 42Kb but I tried to incorporate some ideas of other participants entries.

K then.

Here's the homage gif I promised.

I was able to shoehorn in quite a few pioneers and prominently display their names (so people might want to google what they've seen) as a picture of a pioneer is nice, but it doesn't really help a newbie figure out who the picture is of and why it's there.

You might groove on the picks for homage, you might not.

But I tried to get a pioneer from all major disciplines (electricity STILL rules the roost in pioneer count though).

It's editable (just like the last one that really needs some polish!) and has been through many revisions as you can see from the file name.

There are lots of things that could be switched around or re-timed, and if you think the last one was big, this one is ginormous @ 244.3 kb (which is why I'll not just be able to embed it in post, but have to host it off OU with image link).

As always...a work in progress, and progressing in the manner of "slouching towards Bethlehem".

After the 2 are tweaked to the point I deem penultimate, I'll join them and post the big honkin puppy.

As to WHY I seem to be doing banner and not logo, I don't think you can divorce the 2 for continuity's sake.
I'm still standing by the OU logo/favicon.ico that I proposed earlier as it's symbolically familiar to site name, easily rendered down to the 16X16 size, and very understandable to just about everyone as to why it's the logo.

Kosher?

P.S. Stephan may have gotten the DB increased by 1/2 again its former size, but I STILL AM GETTING "User 'hartiberlin1' has exceeded the 'max_questions' resource (current value: 150000)" and it was a serious trial to get this posted!!!!!!

Schauberger is in there right after Tesla.

It really should be set up "NAME" then "image", but I do it the other way.

I hacked up another version, and will use the addition of Maxwell over Franklin (who was a bit of filler, but still a good inventor!).

It's 233 Kb for the latest one. It's less 9 Kb from the former gif.

The 1st "static" homage banner I did comes in @ 33+ Kb, and I was fine with that, but it didn't include quite a few pioneers that others would like to see, so I juiced it into the monstrosity you presently see @ 7X the size. ( and used it as an object lesson for using GIMP).

As to the bandwidth/money angle, I'll not say more than I don't know if this site is Stephan's sole source  of income (from some of the things I see, it COULD be) or not, but with the amount of advertising here, and the bandwidth necessities he outlines in another thread <link below>, I'd believe it's (the site) self supporting at the very least.

Anyway, to combat the large bandwidth necessary, you could cookie it so it's only "served" once and either replaced with a static banner linked in page content which is clickable to show the full gif, or fish it out of "temporary internet files" when the page is loaded (front page) so it's only downloaded once, and then is up to the discretion of the web user if they want to see it again.

For some interesting insights into the site and recent issues with it (since I've been a member starting in April) go here:

http://www.overunity.com/index.php/topic,5221.0/topicseen.html

....and see some into the forum software and it's "needs".

Such as, do you notice the right hand sidebar is missing lately? ;)
I'll not miss it except for the new user count and "online now" areas.

@exxcomm0n
If you want a new idea, try and make one with Maxwell and Tesla beating up Heavyside. lol
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Heaviside
You can subtitle it "The First Kicks."

Interesting idea.
But I think it'd go against that whole "unity" thing of open source methods for energy independence being available to all of mankind is not exemplified well by a banner showing pummeling. ;)

Of topic a little but a gift to anyone who wants it:

I prefer writing music to doing graphics. Here's some copyright free music I've written in the past, maybe you want to listen?:

I mention because I've been thinking of writing a big overunity tune (ambient style) with lots of classic voice audio, when I get time I'll make a start.

Yucca, fantastic work! I love electronica music with voice effects! Can't wait to hear your overunity piece!

All,

I have been thinking a lot about the OverUnity.com logo and I've come up with something that I think is a great concept.

My logo has some very good properties:
- The basic design is simple.
- It incorporates the letter "O" as the main shape surrounding an "U."
- Small accent marks over the "U" can be interpreted as the umlaut "U" in German for "?ber."
- The accent marks, when associated with the "U" create what looks like an electrical plug.
- The "O" shape can be interpreted as unity.
- The "U" shape can be interpreted as a magnet.
- It is recognizable in small or large formats.
- Easily, it can be made with three solid colors, adaptable to national flag variations for website users around the world.
- A recognizable 16x16 icon can be created.
- The design allows flexibility for creative variation, i.e., a world globe as the "O," shadows, "elecrifying" effects, etc.
- People can have fun creating variations with different colors and effects, even thinking of the design in 3D terms like a cat's eye marble.
- There is room in the center for other elements and the design is easily decorated.
- Some might see a smiley face in the design  :-D .

Attached are some of the variations I've come up with so far.

Below also is a link to a single file showing 16 variations. My design was created in CorelDraw version 9. I intend this basic idea for my "contest" entry.

http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq68/winner_777/UnityLogo8.jpg

If anyone would like to play with variations, send me a private message and I'll send you a CorelDraw file or other file type export with instructions to start. I have had a lot of fun working with this, though it has taken uncounted hours to generate what I have so far. I'm only an intermediate user of CorelDraw and I'm sure that others can come up with some striking renditions as well. Also if anyone has feedback to improve the basic design in minor ways, let me know.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This basic design and slight variations or embellishments should be considered property of this author. By this public notice, I reserve full rights to this design for any purpose, or if implemented as a logo for OverUnity.com, reserve this design for a copyright of OverUnity.com.

Please have some fun with this, everyone, and let me know what you think!

Well now, I'm getting into this design a bit more. Here's a button I've made, 151x151, which would fit in the current header space.

Hi FreeEnergy,

I've included the two "dots" for a few reasons, but keep in mind they are not necessarily dots: Together with the middle area, they might be two prongs of an electrical plug, or by themselves as nodes of two energy poles, or as "dots" for "?ber" (in homage to the BB's German roots), as "eyes," or as other simple elements for decoration. Also, just a "U" inside a circle seems too simple and is probably the same as some other logo.

Here are some hand-tweaked icons to go with my design. They have transparency in the outer areas and should look good against light and dark backgrounds.

All,

I've created a wide screen wallpaper based on my logo concept. Below is a small image. If you'd like the full size version of the file (100 KB jpg at 1680x1050), please send me a PM.

Thanks!

Everyone, I have an update!

Stefan says he can work a logo into the website header. Given the current header area height, and considering a reasonable fit, I suggest that logo designs should display well at 80 pixels in height. It might be a good idea to consider a logo width maximum of 80 pixels also.

I am setting a deadline date for logo submissions: October 31, 2008.

Let's see some talent! Submit your OverUnity.com logo idea!

Kelly and Meyer should not be lined up with real scientists in any way, shape or form. They haven't discovered anything useful. In fact they haven't discovered anything. Same for the water guy Schonberger.

And none of hese scientists used in some of the banners have actually discovered or advocated anything of overunity nature. Tesla, the greates genius of all times, has discovered ways to harness the energy already around us, not how to amplify it. That is not overunity. that is simply free energy. These two are different terms by design. If you mix them together, you onlyu show your own ignorance.

And logos are symbols that describe/symbolise the name. None of the logos actually describes the name the way a good logo should. Even if some are nice to look at.

freeenergy, drop  Nikola Tesla and the background, leave just the text and you may have a good contender. A really good one. That would be a nice logo, or at least a great base to work with.

All,

I've been thinking about some other symbols that could be used for a logo. When I think of "energy" a lightning bolt, AC plug, or light bulb come to mind. PesWiki uses a lightning bolt as do many others. I'm not sure I like the other two that much.

Anyone have some other ideas? Perhaps making letters "O" and "U" to look "energetic" might be a plan?

One goal of a logo would be to convey "overunity": more energy in than out.

I've now made another design. Below is the basic idea. It's very simple, representing the letters "O" and "U," and perhaps a U magnet and coil.

Stefan's color preference, from the appearance of buttons on the bulletin board, seems to be brown/orange, so I've chosen those colors initially. I think these are good colors too.

Advantages of this design are that it reduces well to 16x16 for a favorite icon and has a unique shape among other icons people might see. Also of course the design can be enhanced with effects and decorations.

What do you think, guys?

Hi All,
many thanks already for the great designs you have been
coming up so far !
Looks really fantastic.

As I bought recently a FLASH Slideshow maker program,
I would like to take a few of the best pictures and logos presented
here and combine them into a FLASH logo, which will
be displayed inside the green top border.

So who is donating his picture or banner for this and
what kind of compensation do you ask for this ?

I guess there are so many good pictures and logos and
banners now here, so that it is really hard to pick up a winner
and all the other who made also good ones would be sad to be
not the winner ?

Please let me know your views and post them here.
Many thanks.

Regards, Stefan.

At first Stephan, its a contest, you need to select the best logo that you think he will be the best to represent your site. Don't use all of them, one logo is needed not 100 :)

My 2 cents

You should maybe have a thread with a vote to select which one is the best, so all members can vote on it

All,

Today was to be the final day of this "contest," but I really expected more participation.

Come on everyone, let's see some more ideas!

Unless Stefan objects, I think we should allow submissions for another month yet, at least. I haven't been bumping this thread much with my own posts, but I'll do that in coming days if necessary.

Even if you don't want to invest time making a design, please contribute if you have conceptual ideas for a logo. It would be great to see the final design as a result of community effort!

Remember also that we have a thread for OverUnity wallpaper (http://www.overunity.com/index.php?topic=5873.msg133393#msg133393). Let's have some fun with this as well.

make the logo animated for extra eye candy :)
maybe add some sounds effects?
tesla should probably be somewhere in the logo but isn't a must :)
make it look electro magnificent in a way that sparks but not completely flashy :)
make it represent unity :)
make it represent the open source method :)

I just found out about this, so here is my submission.

I just want to let you know that I didn't see any of the others when I thought of this. The "O" represented by an arrow pointing to itself in a circle came to mind immediately. Obviously, this is a common theme.

I've also included the 16x16 icon in the upper left corner and the icon bitmap in the lower right.

The blue represents clean skies and oceans and the green represents the flora of the Earth.

Many thanks for all the nice logos and banners.

I really have a hard time to choose any winner, so
I will make a new flash banner from some of the best this weekend.
and post it on the frontpage.

Sorry for the delay.

Regards, Stefan.

Here is a first test of the Flash logo.

I still have to rework it a bit and have to include the logos,
that have to be cropped from the bigger logos.
( Still have to crop out some logos from the ones, where
multiple logos were posted onto ONE picture)

When it is ready I will put it soon on the frontpage.

Many thanks to all , who have
contributed.
