My first CD Bedini like Pulse Motor - Please help me improve it!

Hi guys,

I just knocked up my first Pulse motor a few days ago..
It really wasn't hard, just took me a bit to get my head around the circuit as I am a bit of an electronics noob, but learning quickly. And hey if a ten year old school girl can make one then why not me!

Anyway I'm not using an SSG circuit, in fact I only just watched Bedini's instructional video on the SSG...
I've got a relay being activated by a reed switch, one of those alarm types from Jaycar electronics (for the Aussie's out there) and a transformer powering the Power coil (12V about 600mA)

I have a few questions for all the experienced Bedini enthusiasts out there:

- My first transformer got fried and stopped working after leaving it on for 10 mins and I dont know why? At the time i did not have any protection in my circuit, no caps or diodes.. Now I have put a diode in line with 12V supply to stop the back EMF (soon i will try to capture th BEMF). Is it the back EMF that caused the transformer to die?

- I'm wanting to integrate an SSG circuit as my next step but I want to modify it a bit. I was thinking, couldn't I replace the trigger coil on the left hand side with a reed switch to activate the transistor? or instead of winding the coil bifilar couldn't I just have a separate trigger coil that I could move around?

One thing I'm noticing is that as the thing gets faster the point at which the reed triggers the Power coil changes. That is, it likes to be activated earlier as it gets faster, I thought perhaps integrating reed switch or separate trigger coil would allow for this timing to be adjusted. And plus, I would rather buy a coil pre made then having to wind it bifillar myself.       Any thought guys?

-Also I am finding something very strange- when I have it stationary and move a magnet to activate the reed and hold the power coil, I can feel it pulsing??? It shouldn't be pulsing? this is when it is stationary and the reed is permenantly turned on. Its not affecting it when it starts up but i dont know why its pulsing it, my electronics are very simple??


Anyway, any help in the right direction would be great, please comment and offer suggestions to improve it.

Hello!

Nice motor!

About your question why did you transformed die. Well, mine died too when I was playing around whit it, have you opened it yet? You should. Because when I opened mine, there is 4 big diodes, and couple of them did burn, they are make to transform AC to DC (=called Full Wave Bridge Rectifier). So maybe you have same problem, just open your transformer. MAKE SURE IT ARE NOT CONNECTED TO WALL 230V!  ;) And whatch, what parts have burned. If realy those diodes burned, put new one.

Hi!

To avoid burning my transformer I use a 2200uf 50v capacitor connected to the input current. That is an electrolitic capacitor and the connection is, the positive of the capacitor to the positive of the source and the negative of the capacitor to the negative of the power source. It acts as a filter stopping the big spikes comming from the coil. Hence your transformer will last longer.
