HHO generator
« on: June 03, 2008, 10:35:13 PM »
To start, I would like to say Hi to all, I am new here, and to HHO, but am certainly getting a crash course in HHO generating. So let me tell my story, and hopefully those of you better at it than I will be able to point me in a good direction to continue. I started with a clear generator kit from Hydrogen Garage, purchased a jar of KOH from Soapworks, and started the fun. I assembled the generator as per instructions, installed it in what I thought to be the coolest place in the engine compartment of my 1987 Nissan Sentra, hooked everything up, turned it on and drove away. I wish it was just that simple. I am a truck mechanic by trade, and love a challenge, but this is different. No matter how much I adjusted the KOH strength, it appeared that I would always end up with thermal run off, 150+ degrees and 25+ amps. I guess at this time I should say I live in south Florida (think HOT HOT all the time). I hooked a thermometer to the outside of the generator and found that even when not in use it would get to over 130 degrees (I think that's too hot). I tried various ways to keep it cool. I used a washer pump to pump the solution through an old copper transmission cooler, the temp stayed down, but didn't produce any gas. So I took the pump off and let thermal dynamics take its course, that didn't work either, the solution started to turn green, and I kept filling the cooler with HHO so it wouldn't cool it. Finally I relocated my battery to my trunk, and relocated the generator to a cooler spot in the engine bay. I enclosed the generator and mounted a 10" radiator fan above it to give good air circulation, I also glued aluminium strips to the outside of the generator to help with heat dissipation. Finally I also lowered my KOH concentration to 10 amps at start up, within 45 min will hit 20 amps, finally blowing a 25 amp fuse. Well I can't seem to get it to run below about 120-125 degrees (ambient right now is about 95 degrees and very humid). I am going to install a PWM within the next few days, and I am hoping that will help. So my questions to whoever can answer them are; What is a reasonable temp for the generator to run at? and Does anyone have any other cooling ideas?

I had some similar situations, and I did install a PWM controller, that's helped a lot. Still heating up after an hour, but not that much than before, because I can turn the AMPS down. I?m going to buy a pulse generator, and that way my generator will not get that hot.

Thanks for the response, I think I've figured out part of my problem, I don't have the generator shrouded properly, so I'm drawing hot air from the engine compartment, heating up the generator. I noticed while driving home that although the gen temp was over 120 degrees, amp draw was still only 11 or 12 amps. So ambient heat still seems to be an issue. I'll contiue to post as I progress

mrmechanical, et all:

I am following with interest your investigation / findings. I am building an HHO GENERATOR in the following days.

In my case, I am actually building two, and testing them on my "home lab" before inserting into the car. I will build one with 16 15x5 cm stainless stell plates, and another with a stainless steel wire going around a plastic plate (like the one it is being pictured in this website) ... I will measure up HHO generation / amps used etc. Any suggestions, are welcome, btw :)

Regards,

Enrique.

If you go too hot forget PVC or any plastic canisters (I personally wouldn't use any glass canister either, if that brake or blows, it can be ugly), they will melt (personal exp.). If your generator is working too hot, you will create more and more steam than HHO. Correct me if I'm wrong.

whats the matter with steam?
its an additional combustable substance

joe xogen is emphatic----MUST USE SOLID SS CONTAINER sthing which dont expand or contract

sorry  i forgot to say   steam is definately no good if using a bubbler
but should help a lot if using vacuum electrolysis

Yes. but I prefer more HHO than steam. ;)

Steam may be combustible, but wreaks havoc on the engine, especially when the bubbler fills up, and liquid gets in the cylinders, I'm still trying to find out when is too hot. Anyway I shrouded the generator better, and certainly saw some inprovement. On the way home yesterday, it was about 90-95 degrees, and the temp of the blacktop was 125 (yes you can fry an egg on it!!!), I was able to maintain a gen temp of 105 degrees (at 65 mph, lots of air flowing across the gen) by the time I got home (35 miles), this is much better than I have done before. I'm still trying to get the fan setup correct so that when in traffic she doesn't go to 130 degrees+. My plan is that if I can minimize the temp build between min and max, I will be able to adjust the KOH properly, at the moment temp build is approx 10 degrees, with a 10 amp startup. If I can control the temp build from outside heat, the PWM will control heat build up from the amps, then I should be good to go.

mech....
you got a good point there about the steam
is it a proven fact?   doesnt it combust with no residue?

its well known under vacuum you use up tons of water
seen this?

use a lot of water/koh but produces 5-10 times hho
