permanent magnet shielding
« on: September 08, 2005, 08:37:43 PM »
Hi all,

I am actually trying to build a magnetic motor with neo's magnet and i am searching a way to block the magnetic field on one side of the magnet. So what i am looking for is some king of "shielding". I have heard of the "MU METAL" but it seem to be difficult to find.
Is one of you folks know some kind of material that would do the same as MU METAlL?

Regards   Joe

Joe, I dont know "MU Metall", but this guy's here use Wismut / Bismuth as a diamegnetic metal.

Hi Markus,

I went on the site and i did translate it in french cause i don't speak german and could not find the part that they talk about "bismuth", the translater is not very efficient. But did you read that he is using bismuth to lower the magnetic field of a permanent magnet?

Thanks  Joe

Joe, here is the direct link to an experiment of this two guys using wismuth for a dimagentic levitation.

Hey Joe,

Don't search more. Try this one: http://www.amuneal.com/pages/magshield-intro.php

Good Luck!

Why not use a Halbach array? It concentrates all the force to one side of the arrangement, with no special materials needed.

What i see in this Halbach array arrangement is that they use "thick cube magnets"  if i am right,  so it becomes really hard to build a small magnet motor with these kind of magnets.
What i need is something "flat"  that can be use to "hide" a part of a 1"  by 1/8' thick magnet.

Thanks  Anyway,

Joe

Joe, If you can reduce the magnetic field strenght by 30-40% in the right points, you have a chance...
Approxymately it is enough for a really good magnetic configuration to work.

Good work, all for you.
