Few simple questions
« on: May 06, 2008, 12:44:25 PM »
Hi stefan and to all those other that truely know the answers to my few questions.

1) First of all i would like to know why my newman machine would stop when i placed a top coil over the spinning magnet and closed the circuit? i then put a led in the top circuit and it didnt stop it but slowed it down and made a small amount of light on the led, i then used a different coil on top which consisted of the same mass but thinner wire and obviously more windings , now with the thinner wire it didnt slow down as much and made more light in the led, now i understand thinner wire helps generate more power and thats why the led glowed that bit more but why does it not slow down as much as the thicker wire? is it because the thicker wire is closer to being more like a copper pipe, a copper pipe will slow a magnet down even help it defy gravity to a point.

2)Now this gets a little wired, i have the bottom coil (driver coil) hook at as the diagram instructs by chuck2na on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HhJqjMUEb0 with the capacitor in the circuit, now picture this i disconnect one wire to the capacitor and hold it with one hand and now i hold the top coil over the magnet with the motor already running of course and the led lights up as it had been, now as i reconnect the capacitor and the motor speeds up , the led that is powed by the top coil stops.

Now my question here is why? there is no pysical connection (that we can see) between the top coil and the rest of the motor, i would have thought since the permanent magnet was speeding up even more because of the cap that the leds would glow more instead they stop, obviously it magnetic but of what nature dose anyone know?

3) I also hooked the led parralle to the bottom coil and ran the motor and it lit up obviously cose its the same coil connected to the battery , but is it making light off both back emf from rotation of the magnet and collapsing spikes? if it is making power from rotation of magnet then why does led stop instantly when i cut power supply even tho magnet still rotates? motor speed dosnt change by the way when i connect and disconnect led.

4)When i run led off driver coil as explain just above i have capacitor disconnected, when i reconnect capacitor led stops and motor speeds up, now is the cap as showen in the circuit in the link above is it just banking power up off the battery and releasing into the motor for more thrust or is it actually capturing the back emf?  i know it must drain a bit of power to begin with cos when i connect my capacitor up as showen , the magnet shifts a slight bit even tho its nowwhere near its brush point on the commutator (copper brush ,iron nail).

And yes stefan i definatly get you on what you say about running a cap accross your commutator and how it suppress the sparks , becuase i was connection and disconnection and wires to the cap playing with the speed i have well made that observation, now stefan one last favour, list 10 or less (or more lol) dos and dont to making big sparks that effectivly charge up your battery .

I can only answer some of the questions right now:

If you have two coils of the same mass and shape, the thinner wire will have more turns and higher resistance.  Say if you use small wire that allows for twice the turns in the same volume, you will have a wire that is twice as long and 70.7% as thick, with a resistance that is four times higher.  The voltage induced in the coil will only double since there are twice the turns. The result is that the power induced into the generator coil is much lower with the thinner windings.  Thus the power lost by the driving coil to the generator windings is reduced.  Also, because the windings of the thinner wires have more turns, they produce enough voltage to run the LED.

The rotor itself is not producing the voltage in the top coil that will drive the LED.  Apparently, the changing electric field inside the coil (due to ON and OFF application of battery voltage) is what produces the magnetic flux necessary to drive the back EMF in the top coil that will cause the LED to glow.

I think suppressing the sparks with the capacitor you used also suppressed the voltage induced in the top coil. This may be the cause of your observations.
