custom Alternator/generator design help

hi guys,

i am biulding my elternator from scratch.

using  24 N50 2"x1"x.05 sitting flat on a 20" disc facing the coils

coils i am using 22 14AWG coils, still not sure how to come about the coil winding, some say 45 and others say  more or less...

any way i am looking for 12volt to charge batteries and my RPM at 200 kick in

coils have no core.  or should i put a core in them?. note that the magnets are on one side of the coils not both.

so how should my windings be?? at 200rpm start to produce ..

Alternatively look for stuff made by hugh piggot. I have a complete manual that walks you through all of the construction steps that I downloaded, I cant remember where I found it though. Its called "construction of a PWA" or something along those lines.

That is great info, but i am building one stator and only one rotor facing each other using the material i mentioned above.

All i am asking the gurus is waht to recommend for coil AWG and how many winds or how to test it, do i make many different number of winds?!! And test each one of them? But test what exactly..that is when i am kinda los!!..

Most of the wind turbines that you see are optimized for about 650 rpm.  If you are only going to be turning about 200 rpm you are going to have to increase the coil windings by quite a bit.   I have just finished one using the 12 magnets per 2 rotors and 9 coil setups. My coils in this one have 400 turns. (that won't work using the 14 gage, your coil rotor would end up being way too thick.)  You can probably get away using about 200 if you increase the diameter out to a couple of feet and use a higher magnet coil number setup. (I'm charging a 24v system not 12)  That will work ok on a vertical but it would be a bit big for a horizontal type wind turbine.. 
 Using only one magnet rotor you are going to loose a lot of power.   You really DO need a magnet rotor on both sides of the coils.  If not that at least wind some steel strips behind the coils to link the mag fields.  The link shown in one of the earlier messages has a good example of this.

Hi avr3,

You could test different types of coils when your rotor is up and running. Try bifilar coils to achieve higher voltage at lower rpm. If your motor as limited power, use the air core design. Try different form of coils like round for round magnets, oval or rectangular coils for square or rectangular coils. With paper, compass and ruler, you can design the shape of the coils to be used easy and with the mounted rotor, test them.

Congrats avr3,

You have a winner there, in both design and execution. It's low cost and very easy to replicate. The wing can be used with other alternator designs too. Great project.

thank you guys, i did not use a calculator to do this, i stated from scratch, i used cartboard and variouse things to get to the design and i tried it in many diffrnt configuration and this one works very well.

i am going to mount a 38 volts Ametek on it to show you that the mass and easy spinn plus the rpm will easilly produce power. the more wind and the more power you will have.

I dont see any sketch about what you are planning to build. You are speaking about coils when air-gap motor -but just wires between magnetc flux are what have roles when spectacle named as air-gap machine, nothing to do with coils by literally means. wires could be wound like waves - no "coils"! Even when windings formed like "coils" even then only sides what cross with moving direction of magnets come to game - both sides have to meet magnets , one N another S,  at the same time - this is the only way to get good results.
Air-gap between magnets when two rotors or airgap between rotor magnets and returning iron need to be minmized - because windings ("coils") need to be pressed as much as possible.
When 1/2" thick magnets on both sides then te best result is possible when windings are beded in range of 1/4" - less is better, larger airgap reduces performance dramatic, causes needs for more turns - more turns causes needs for thinner wire ... etg ... and you nice daydream project will collapse as dominos effect.
And about thick or thin wire:
When air-gap machine then thicker wire causes discernable eddy losses - very seldom thicker than 0.5mm wire used - as thicker wire as more losses.
The only way is to use stranded enamelled copper or fabriced Litz wire.

Are you trying single phase generator?

Looks like one phase, but not understandable choiced scheme,
Believe me - three phase Y will be much more better,
And what about  20" disc ... holly rumpus! - its more than half?n meter ...
