A few days ago I used defraggler to clean up and defrag a really bad NTFS volume on a Win2000 machine. It worked flawlessly, on a 10 GB drive with only 500 MB free space.

The Windows utility would not even run (until, of course, after I had already defraggled.) This is a drive that cannot even be entered without booting the full Win2000 system; it's running a proprietary VC system. It had me stumped until I found Defraggler.

Defraggler will also defrag individual files or directories, and also will defrag the free space, alone or in conjunction with a full defrag.

It's supposed to work on FAT and NTFS file systems; I've only tried it on the NTFS.

you know what i love about linux..
i can cook dinner while it boots and then i can surf the internet while i eat..
cause that is all it is good for..
if you think about it.. if linux was as popular as ms it would be just as bad..
thank goodness bill stole dos from ibm..
after he got fired..

Therefore, it is much less infectious.

What is this fragmentation about?
What is a virus?
I never have heard or experienced such things.
I guess it must be a concern in WIN solutions.

Strange, why people pay a lot for something that is so bad when there are free solutions, systems doing all the same (maybe except games).

I think you have a different piece of unverified gossip to what I once read about Bill.

I'm under the impression that he legally bought the rights (and source code) to dos, from a small software development company called Seattle Software. It was jokingly called Q-DOS by the Seattle developers who thought it was, at their current stage of completion, a "Quick and Dirty Operating System".

Bill simply bought Q-DOS outright, for a pittance, renamed it to MS-DOS, and then sold (non-exclusive) distribution rights to IBM who were in the expensive (at the time) process of creating PC-DOS themselves. By the time they got PC-DOS up and running, Microsoft had already sold off distribution rights to numerous computer manufacturer competitors, including those using clone chipsets, thereby establishing MS-DOS as a ubiquitous readily available operating system and Microsoft as a well known "brand" in the software marketplace.

Cheers

@all

For those running Firefox but are having long delays when browsing the forum, or, like me on my office cuomputer I was getting a "Warning: Unresponsive Script Error" I just downloaded YesScript and installed it and now no more putzing around with all the scripts that are loaded on each page. Super fast page views now.

Just go in Tools  - Add-ons and click on the Get Extension link. At that web page type YesScript in the search engine and you will find the download. Get it installed, then go into it via Add-Ons again and add the Blacklisted URL for this forum as "http://www.overunity(dot)com" and re-start Firefox and come back to the forum for fast browsing. Enjoy.

I have been running the add-on No Script with no problems here.  How does the program you are using differ from mine?  Do they do basically the same thing?

Thanks,

Bill

Thanks Stefan,
Defraggler seems fairly nice.

LOL, NoScript/YesScript...

I almost thought you guys were kidding around.

But sure enough they both exist.  ::)

The few reviews I saw seemed to indicate YesScript was favoured.

Both good and sad to know that java script delays effect FireFox too,
but at least there is a solution for that browser as well.

I never used NoScript so I cannot really say. All I can tell you is with this little Add-on, Browsing is super fast now. No more rumbling through endless scripts tha want to do this and that before the page is rendered.

Thanks.  Sounds the same to me then.  This one does not allow any scripts to load and my pages load very fast.

From what I understand, Windows uses a random number generator to determine where it stores data fragments.

- - - - -

 ;D

Anyway, you could try defragging your computer while there is a large ISO file, or some other large chunk of arbitrary data.  Then delete the data, or copy it and then delete it.  This create a large area of continuous space which new files can be placed in without fragmenting.

Just as well, it may be easier to use the XP partition tools to create a new, small partition on the hard drive specifically for and ONLY for the swap file.

Linux does this as it is, so that the swap file doesn't become fragmented as well.

This was a problem back in 95, 2000, ME, NT ..etc.  I started doing this myself to avoid such problems, but alas, it's hard to keep it in shape - I just switched to linux and use the journaled file system - it doesn't have the fragmentation problems that FAT32 or NTFS does.

That's that. ...but so much for gaming ( better this way as it is ).
