Title: Earth battery with windings !!
Post by: Peter Stanford on July 07, 2007, 06:01:31 AM
On the wickpedia there are mentions of old patents for Earth Batteries and Sea Batteries . Several people have made earth batteries but have built them on too small a scale ( the anodes need to be a minimum of 10' appart ) and the resulting amperage is too small to be of use ..  I plan to build battery with anodes min appart 10' and around 15' deep but I'm thinking of using windings on the end of anodes to increase amperage !! What do you think of that for an idea and any ideas on how many windings to make, and in what direction ?? I plan to use a hand auger with a 4" bit , copper tube and galvanized star pickets for anodes.

If you are going 15 feet you may as well go 22. the longer the more amperage. If you need 10 feet between anodes what is the diameter of the cathode. A lot of things go into the requirements of and earth battery, if you hit rock you reached maximum depth because of the moisture requirement. Have you drilled a test hole yet?

Howdee Raburgeson,  NO I haven't drilled test holes yet.  When I say the anodes need to be 15 appart I actually mean the positive (copper ) terminals and the negative ( dissimilar, in this case zinc coated star pickets ) terminals.  Yes 22' would be better but I already have an area in mind that travels appox west that would accomadate around 15' seperation of terminals but not much more without much work.. I'm out the bush and rely on a pelton wheel  and solar to top up batteries etc..  I already have a coil of copper tube ( appox 3/4" dia ) and as I am a pensioner funding is limited so I try to do with what I have at hand.. What I realy want help with is the coils ( windings ) Would they be better to attatch onto the ends of the terminals to join up or to actually wrap them around the copper tube and star pickets?? All the positive terminals ( ie copper ) need to face north and the negative terminals to face south !!  Just Ideas at the moment but the auger is coming up near the top af the list of things to BUY but I still need to eat..
