NAPHTHALEEN MOTH BALLS AND WHAT IS WRONG ON THIS PICTURE
« on: May 18, 2007, 12:11:45 PM »
HI ALL,
I was ask to post my experience with adding naphthaleen mothballs to gasoline.
I am driving now for over a year my GMC safari Van with mothballs added to the gasoline. 5 mothballs for 20 gallon. the result is phantastic I get with this Van 1997 modell 6 cylider 4.3l 170,000 miles on it, a wopping 20 mpg in city traffic, this was a increase from 12 mpg with gasoline only of pretty much 60%, WOW.
Now there comes up the big question what is wrong with this picture if I can get 20mpg city with adding five Naphthalenn moth balls for 20 gallone on my old van and e many of the new cars are introduced now 10 years later with 18 to 22 mpg city as the highest milage with all the new technology, what did the industrie do the last 10 years to improve milage.
Now further to my experience the facts are:
1. the engine has a increased idlle speed
2. a much higher tourqe
3. a much smother run
and last but not least the enourmus saving at the pump.
As a sample in a 35 mph zone I can only go with the idlle speed.

I just got a bigger chevy Van G20 1986 model, 100,000 miles on it, 8 cylinder 5.0l.
the first three tank filling with regular 87 gasoline only brought 12 mpg city. then I added myt 5 naphthaleen moth balls and the last four tank filling brought the milage up to 19 mpg. isn it something!!
what I did and do anyway is add to every other tank filling one of this little carburatour cleaner bottles.
if I compare the cost for 20 gallon with a price of $ 2.90/gallon is 58 dollar regular for 240 miles, with the moth balls added is $ 58 plus gasoline $0.15 the 5 moth balls, plus $ 0.50 for the cleaner brings it to $ 59 and I get 400 miles out of it. with other words I saved 60%.
I also wana point out that naphthaleen is used as a additive for gasoline in europe anyway. this just for all the guys who mayve come up with some danger arguments. the other fact for the danger is that moth balls are used since more then 100 years as for hanging in the closed or drawers to hold moth away and nobody was ever hurt.
this was just my expierience  with moth ball addditive.
greetings
walt

Hi Walter:

WOW! First time I ever heard of the lowly moth-balls doing wonders! I have a 154K mile V8 SUV doing 12m/gallon in town driving. I love to do this provided there is no long term harm done to the enginer & valves because I can't afford the repairs otherwise.

Can you point us to any regulatory organizations with regards to the good/bad use of the moth-ball 'technology'? Thanks again for sharing.

Chris

I tryed that on my SUV v8 the last year, but i did not notice change on the highway that much, but i think i was putting to much ball (10), so maybe i will need to retry with 5 instead. Since i dont use my VUS a lot, it take foreever to see a result :)

Hi chris
I  dont quite understand what you mean with regulatory organizations.
I just know mine and from a few friends results. I have driven with my safari van over the last 1 1/2 year over 30K miles with no problemes most of the others are also using it for more then 10K miles no problems ether.
To be honest after more then 150K miles I personal dont care what is happening after another 100K miles down the road because what I have saved at the pump is many times more then what new valves repar would cost. at a price of $2.90 per gallone and a saving of say 60% it gives by 100K about $ 6,000 ! To rebuild a engine cost about $ 2,000 to 3,000 including labor and tune up, thats still only halve max.
greetings

Hi,
I dont know much about highway driving results because I only drive city. But keep in mind that naphthaleen like gasoline too tends to avapurate if not used over a longer periode of time. Its like with the originale use for moth balls they hang in a closet and after some time ( about 4 to 8 weeks ) they are evapurated just simply gone. i also use them to hold snakes away from my yard and they last also only about 4 weeks till they are gone.
after my experience more is not allways good in my case more then 5 per 20 gallon did not do more it even tend to lower the milage becvause it is a oversaturation of the gasoline and the computer will correct this like a closet choke.
one major fact is that the engine needs about 100 miles to adjust, some engine running even rough, in this case disconnect the batterie for about 5 to 10 minutes ( thats the time the computer needs to loos the memory)and then run again .
