Title: My version of a 3 Phase Generator

Greetings,

I am working with what I have, so this is partly why this design is the way it is.

The plan is to design and develop a 3 phase permanent magnet generator.  The coils will be wired 120 deg from each other (marked by colour) the magnets are rare earth magnets .750 dia. and .125 depth.

Not sure if the pattern is right for three phase or not.  I am not an electrical engineer but believe this should work...anyone out there understand where this is headed and have some feedback as to how this could be better?

Right on...looks like a fairly large motor...and a few bucks worth of copper.

Still not sure that the pattern that i have will produce 3 phsae... guess I will have to build it to see...

Yes it will if you wire it that way.

So I got the wiring down...what about the magnet pattern...is it right...dose it need to be staggered in a different way then what I have?

I am planning on powering my generator with a wind turbine that is under construction... Should be done and spinning in the next couple of days...I wish I could show you the designs for it today but want to get the prototype built first.  I have been working on it for some time but am getting closer each day to having a working model.

As another note I have been reading about the Halbach array. 

Been thinking how I might add this into my design.  Got a few ideas running around my head...just gotta catch up to them all :)

halbach arrays are good for putting magnets under stress and isolating fields. Leaving magnets in these conditions pushes the fields around permantly, damaging them for the original purpose. Depending on field stregth it takes years to warp the fields,(some of my older pmm designs using alinco magnets have their fields all twisted). I don't see how using the array will help you.

And your arrangement of magnets and coils, wouldn't lead to true 3 phase power output. It would be more like three single phase power outputs. the coils are good, but having the mags line up with a coil all at the same time wouldn't turn out three individual sine waves 120degrees offset from eachother, it would be all of those waves insync as its drawn.

I would use six groups of magnets, Rectangle type, that are 1.5X the width of your coils. And go pos/neg/pos/neg/pos/neg ,That should give you true three phase, depending on speed x cycles per second. It would be 3 cycles per rotation and 1200 rpm for 60 cycles per second. Check my math but I believe thats what you'd get. If 200 rpm is what the turbine gets from the wind you'd get 200x3=600 cyc per min = 10 cycles per second.

You could always put 12 groups of magnets and get 6 cycles per rotation, if the coil was narrow enough to avoid having a pos and neg pole exposed to it at the same time. Otherwize the coil will be trying to induce a neg, and pos flow at the same time. Some of the engineering type might want to check what I am saying.

Yeah I thought that something did not seem right with the way all coils would have a charge on them at the same time.  Like I say...I am far from an electrical engeneer but this is starting to make some sence...thank you so much for all your input...here is my revised design.

The magnets are not 1.5 times as wide...but I think this should be ok. yes no?  These are the only magnets that I have right now so thats what I plan to use.

So long as the field is about 1.5 times it should be fine else you might end up with a nice positive sine peak with a long duration at 0volts and then a sine negative. If you are use neos equal width will be just fine and a clean sine wave should be generated. as one field leaves the coil another is introduced. Remember to flip polarites of the magnets.

These are your designs?...Very nice work!  I saw the large 22 inch disks you made and they are huge! The blades are made with wonderful woodworking skills...and the wood bandsaw is awesome!

The wiring patters of the large generator with 5 coils is interesting.  Is this a standard thing to wire several threads into one coil? I had not thought of this before.

This is an awesome site...it looks like it was a lot of fun building them.

The magnets are going to be on a disk spinning above the "plate" of coils.  I was thinking of sandwiching them between a disk of plastic and a wood back. I was suggested not to use metal (steel or Aluminum) as it might increase magnetic drag...this I do not know but would like to.  Either way I plan to use a wood disk.  Drill out the holes .062 screwnail the plastic cover over the wood disk and mount to the shaft of my turbine. 

I am working with single wires making up one coil...I think I have about 40-50 winds to my coils.
The disk of coils (also a large block of plastic) will be attached to some kind of threaded height adjustment shafts to adjust the height or closeness of the coils to the magnets. (.070 -.100 is the gap dimension, I think)  Some day, in my spare time, when I learn about robotics, I would like to make this automated to pull away in light winds.  When I am done that, in my other free time I am going to learn about gear making and start playing with my own gear configurations.

I am now about to get the diodes to make the 3 phase rectifier to be able to send the power to battery banks.  There are so many variables that I want to play around with.  Different coils types...adding a steel core...other configurations of magnets and coil shapes...

It's especially hard to know all the answers when there are so many more questions yet to be asked :) JesterTerrestrial
