I hadn't seen that but there was an article years and years ago in, I think, National Geographic, that suggested the use of wedges/curved sections around a load that could be pulled by ropes.  Apparently, several of these curved sections were found in Egypt.  The article wasn't nearly as fun as the one in your link.
