By the way, the pipe has no water in it, it connects all the way down to the air pocket (upside down bucket). Just for clarification.

Sorry, it will not work.

The air in the bucket will not be maintained. The water pressure at the bucket will force the air back up the pipe and will take some of the air in the bucket with it. Your pipe will end up filled with water except to top U bend.
