Tommey Reed's Custom Coil Winder

Hi All,
I just got back about two weeks ago, being it's still cold in NW PA, I decided to work with electronics.
I'm Building a custom coil winder that use a Arduino and a few driver for the stepper motors.

I'm just about finished with the build, many parts are 3D printed and takes a long time.

This is just a simple design and a few pictures.

Question for you:  Are you going to use some kind of stainless steel tube to accurately place the wire on the bobbin?

I tried using an idler wheel with a tiny slot but wasn't able to get the wheel close enough to where the wire lays down and hence, the winding would jump on me and get out of sync with where my stepper was trying to feed it.

I was thinking just that, also maybe a thin flat flexible plate to keep the wire from jumping also.

Yeah, when the wire jumps, no amount of precision stepper control can recover, at which point a beautiful spool of copper turns to crap.
Because from that point on, the wire is no longer in the same position as the stepper.

If you use a tube and just lay the wire right where it needs to go, almost no tension is required.  The finished bobbin will be solid
as a rock with no gaps or bumps.

Years ago I added a fourth stepper to my CNC machine for winding coils.  I wrote a program that would take wire and bobbin
parameters, then spit out Gcode I could send to my machine.  Everything worked good except for the darn tube.  I didn't use
one and it showed.  Some wire would still wind pretty good, but most would jump someplace and leave a less-than-perfect spool.

If you'd like, I can dig around a little and see if I can find that program, might be helpful to you.  You would probably want to
rewrite it anyway, but some of the math in there may save you some time.  I was actually surprised how well a CNC machine
can do things like this.  Certainly nice to not have to design everything from scratch or make a single purpose machine.

Pretty cool Coil Winder project your building.

Attached an old Windoze program called GCoil 1.4 (inside the GSuite 1.4.3 rar). Couldn't find it
on the internet anymore. I still use it now and again to wind a quick coil on the CNC Lathe.

Has a pdf readme and the Source Code. Thought it might be of some value or interest.

Also, I use these "Closed Loop Steppers" sometimes - if I'm concerned about loosing steps. [~ $27US complete]
