I think with a little ingenuity, the Cornish hydrogen generator can be brought up-to-date in a nice tidy package that would serve emergency needs very well. The fuel lasts forever, unlike gasoline or Diesel which goes bad. Spools of aluminum can be stored and used by off-gridders, etc.

:o  General Motors eVolt average e-consume per 100 Km range : 12 KWh

compared :

modified Cornish ic-engine

Conventional modifications were made to the carburetor to enable the engine to run on a mixture of hydrogen and air. The wire 22 carries a voltage of about 18000 volts with a current of about 1 amp.

p.s.: Cornish system + wave disc engine ? http://ffden-2.phys.uaf.edu/webproj/212_spring_2014/Ryker_Dial/index.html

theoretically the above 18000 VA x 0,2/0,6 (engine conversion efficiency  improvement) = 6000 VA

I think fuel cells would be a better application in transportation and home electricity, while catalytic's for heating, hot water and cooking. Many improvements in fuel cells since the Cornish days!

www.proepowersystems.com
Ic- engine or fuelcells ? An opinion !

http://www.proepowersystems.com/Fuel_Cell_Comparison.htm

http://www.proepowersystems.com/PROEHOME.HTM

Fuel cells, converting fuel to electricity and heat, for home use better than for transportation .

2electric conversion efficiency : 50% average

The disadvantage : over 1000 US$/KW actually !

The DOE plan (mass production costs),we as endconsumer see such prices actually :

page 105 "System cost per KWnet " :   $28,784        $17,170           $14,128            $13,064
https://www.energy.gov/sites/prod/files/2018/02/f49/fcto_battelle_mfg_cost_analysis_1%20_to_25kw_pp_chp_fc_systems_jan2017_0.pdf

https://www.fuelcellstore.com/fuel-cell-stacks/high-power-fuel-cell-stacks

This 50% electric efficiency ,by lower costs : compact home co-generation ic-genset   https://patents.google.com/patent/DE3835502A1/en

1. Take the water-cooled diesel engine out of a VW Golf accident car or a new, similar water-cooled diesel engine, ideally with a catalytic converter, insert it into a chimney,

+ 2. take a suitable car gearbox from the car recycling

+ 3. and buy a new power generator of about power 10 KW,

couple everything and the house power heating system is ready for use in continuous operation,

can run it in every basement with such a quiet and quiet run that nobody is disturbed or disturbed.

all-in-one set : max. 3000 Euros for 10 KW

   disadvantages ?                http://www.gun-engine.pl/en/index.html    http://www.gun-engine.pl/en/kh.html

                                          http://www.rexresearch.com/holubowicz/holubowicz.htm

                                                                                          low cost ?

     https://www.greencarcongress.com/2009/04/concept-compact-twocycle-cogenerating-pistondriven-turbine-to-deliver-60-efficiency.html

The Reinhardt Turbine is designed to be compact, cost-effective and easy to manufacture.
Andrews estimates that the manufactured cost per kW will be less than $10, so a 30 kW engine would cost around $300.
“Add in a few kWh of lead-acid batteries and you have a cheap and efficient advanced powertrain.”

Fraunhofer-Institute(applied physics) -member -Expert-ise (good or bad -for Germany their consumer !?) :

https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.n-tv.de/auto/Hat-Wasserstoff-fuers-Auto-doch-eine-Zukunft-article22539449.html

http://www.gun-engine.pl/en/kh.html as conversion-kit :

 30      eco-units/100  Km conventional ic-car consume

 10      eco-units/100 Km  gun-engine modified engine ic-car

   1,25 eco-units/100  Km  gun-engine hydro-carbon fuel consume,the 8,75 units water : on board fuel-mixer/reformer

7,5(grid electricity mix)-1,25 (renewable electricity)eco-units/100 Km are the electric cars  their consume ,

not -more- economical than "gun engine efficiency"

gun-engine option: on board CO2-filter = cleaner than conventional renewable electricity sourced electric cars

the gun-engine (Kit)  an IDEAL ( engine for ) Co-Generation/BHKW

6 liter hydro-carbon fuel consume conventional compact class ic-car per 100 Km,now with modifying Kit to gun engine :

0,25 liter hydro-carbon fuel + 1,75 liter water per 100 Km consume

calculation for 15 000 Km drive per annum and 2 Euros/liter hydro-carbon fuel at gas station :

15 000 Km / 100 Km  x 0,25 liter/100 Km x 2 Euros/litre = 75 Euros/annum

assuming 18 KWh batteryset in e-car with 200 Euros/KWh costs = 3600 Euros

3600 Euros/75 Euros = 48 years R.O.I. ( without capital tax = social communism )
