Independent of energy and water

“Self” is 7.7 meters long, 3.45 meters wide and 3.2 meters high.


With a weight of around 5 tons, the box can be transported by truck or helicopter.

The challenge for the two designers was to combine technology, supply and space efficiently and comfortably at the same time. The technical know-how, on the other hand, came from Empa and Eawag as well as their partner institutions and companies. So that two people can live in the box for a longer period of time without a water or electricity connection, the rainwater collected on the roof, for example, has to be treated to make drinking water and the slightly polluted service water has to be recycled. In the living room, a transparent 200-liter fresh water tank shows the residents how much water they are using. Making consumption visible is an important concern of the two designers. “Abstract consumption figures say too little,” Björn Olsson and Sandro Macchi are convinced. "Consumption must be noticeable, visible so that we can change our behavior."


 Testing innovative technologies and materials Hardly anything on the “Self” corresponds to today's “state of the art”, almost everything consists of specially designed and conceived components, such as the building envelope made of sandwich panels made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP).


Highly insulating vacuum panels are used for thermal insulation.


A heat exchanger pre-heats the fresh air with the exhaust air, the water filter runs almost without electricity, the toilet uses only one liter of water per flush.


The project is also testing hydrogen technology in practice - i.e. the synthesis, storage and use of hydrogen, for example for cooking and heating .


Hydrogen is produced by electrolysis, the electrical energy for this is generated in an environmentally friendly way with solar cells on the roof.


Until the hydrogen is needed, it is temporarily stored in containers filled with metal hydrides, another innovation developed at Empa.


For the time being, the cell will serve as a test and demonstration object for some time and can be seen at various trade fairs and exhibitions.


Later on, Empa plans to use “Self” as a mobile guest room or as a research station in the mountains.
