Thermal battery stores 100 times more heat than water
« on: February 06, 2019, 06:08:13 PM »
Hello,
you've heard of this super thermal storage method: Thermal battery stores 100 times more heat than water
13.1.2018: in 39 Nachrichten Science:
https://energiestammtisch.hpage.com/39nachrichtenscience2017.html

Thermische Batterie speichert 100 Mal so viel Wärme wie Wasser http://www.trendsderzukunft.de/waermebatterie-neues-material-wirkt-als-hocheffizienter-waermespeicher/2018/01/11/ - AzoPMA ein Polymer https://d-nb.info/1119447607/34

that sounds so unbelievable, and I have not found anything since then, does that know of you?

Not sure how that would be possible.   Traditional science at least says water can store more kilocalories per mole than any other substance.  Is this actually about storing heat or is it about storing power in batteries?

The energy density of a lithium metal battery is 1.8 MJ/Kg.
In the last link, they say they have 510 J/g, which means 0.51MJ/Kg.

It's less than a third of a lithium battery, and it's thermal energy, not electricity. Not bad but imho we are still rather far from practical applications.

Its about thermal energy....

https://www.umass.edu/newsoffice/article/paving-way-non-electric-battery-store

The term "battery" does not of necessity  refer to a battery of electric cells.

" Azo PMA Ounce for Ounce it holds 200 times as much thermal energy as water"

The issue is few understand the term "heat" and even fewer understand the term "energy" within a broad context.
For example water can store a large amount of energy as heat or thermal energy which relates to the internal kinetic energy of it's particles. Water does have the highest specific heat at 4.18 kJ/Kg.K however a sodium acetate hand warmer can store magnitudes more energy than water because it can store energy as sensible heat which we can feel and as latent heat relating to a reversible chemical process. So the sodium acetate can give up heat and drop in temperature like water then you click a little disk and it heats up again because of the stored latent energy generating even more heat.

As such we should understand that "heat" relates to to the internal kinetic energy of a substance however this does not always represent the total energy of the substance. Heat is simply a form of energy however there are many other forms of energy which can be stored in a substance and converted to heat on demand.

Thank you for bump
I had forgotten and this is close to me ( close enuff)

Not sure AC has been reading here lately ... would be nice to have more discussion on this .
200 times water is huge and would be amazing for summer harvesting of heat
For cold season use !( much smaller area dedicated)

Will make a few calls on this next week
