Hi Stephan:
   And above all "MAKE A SEPERATE USER FOR USE". Never run admin account for your user. You can do catastrophic things that cant be undone. When you try an admin function under your usr name, it will prompt for admin password.
   I have been using linux from while Linus was still in college. Circa  Slakware 1.25. Still have the disk sets of over 50 and the CD's. You had a generic core to boot from and then you had to decide what options you wanted. Then re compile it and hope all went well. Getting X to run was a major pain most of the time.

At the moment I run Zandros, Ubunto and Mandrake which I believe all are the Debain flavor.
