Forum Formatting problem
« on: May 24, 2018, 12:19:44 PM »
For the last several days now I have been having a problem when posting on this forum.  For some unknown reason I am not getting a space between lines when using my return key to add a space between my lines of type.  Normally I like to leave a line or two between paragraphs to make them easier to read.  I now have to hit the enter key a couple of times to get that space.

I also have noticed that when I type my signature if I hit the enter key only once my name stays on the same line without moving down at all.

I don't know if the problem is something to do with this forum or if the latest version of Firefox (my browser) is the problem.

Is anyone else having similar problems?

Thanks,
Carroll

Hi Carroll,
Yes, I experince the same here. I also use Firefox which updates itself automatically.
I find this issue did not appear only recently but have been present for several months or so.

Hi Gyula,

I was not having this problem until the last couple of weeks or so.  I also let Firefox update automatically.  What also seems strange is that I am not having this problem on other forums.  I belong to several and all the others seem to be fine.  I usually only use my laptop for posting but I have a desktop.  I will try later today to post from there to this forum and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply,
Carroll

Yes
I had  noticed this and attributed it to a hack ?
bunches all the text together .
and seems to fight attempts to correct it [some hacker is probably getting big jollies from this

This is a test using Chrome as my browser.

Will it show the same problem?

This seems to be working fine.  So it must be something amiss between Firefox and OU.com.  When I tried it with this desktop PC and Firefox I still had the problem.  But switching to Chrome solved the problem.  I guess I will do some research on some Firefox forums to try and solve this because I much prefer Firefox over Chrome.  If I find a solution I will post it here.

This is another test using Opera as my browser.

Will it work ok?

Yes.  My Opera Browser seems to work fine when I look at the preview.  Another clue that it must be something in the Firefox browser that is causing the problem.

Has anyone had a problem with the formatting other than Firefox users?

Thanks,
Carroll

Hi Carroll,

I thought to test this issue in Microsoft Internet Explorer because it is in the Windows and needs no installation.

So far so good, the text editor works as it should, I have no problem with formatting this text I am writing.

Recent versions of Opera are based on the Chrome engine.   Been using Opera since it's alpha days and have not had any issues here like Firefox is having.   It's probably a combination of SMF forum software oddities and newer formatting used by Firefox and a couple other browsers.

Here is a post from Windows 10 using the Edge browser.  Single return here.
More text.  Two returns here.

Some more text.  Three returns here.

End. I would suspect a forum issue.  Firefox 60, Chrome, and Edge all seem to use %0D%0A as a line break in textarea form data.
I ran a small test case on an Apache httpd server using a form with a textarea field, and a CGI script to capture the submitted text.

Here is a post from Firefox 60 on a Fedora 28 64-bit Linux system.  Single return here.More text.  Two returns here.
Some more text.  Three returns here.

End.  I had seen the missing line-break problem on my last post from this system.

I agree it seems to be a forum issue combined with a Firefox issue.  I only see the problem with that combination.  I have tried Chrome and don't see any problem with it.  All my current PC's are running Windows 7.  I posted a query to the Mozilla support forum but have not gotten a reply yet.  What also seems strange is Gyula reported he first started having this problem months ago.  I only saw it come up in the last couple of weeks.

Got a reply from Mozilla.  They said to restart Firefox in "Safe" mode which turns off all extensions and plug-ins.  Single carriage return. Now trying two carriage returns.
Now trying 3 carriage returns.

End of test.

Looking at the preview it appears that didn't help anything.  So an extension or plug-in is NOT causing the problem.
