Overunity.com is coming unglued
« on: November 30, 2006, 12:22:17 AM »
Stefan, your web site is coming unglued and becoming next to useless.  Your forum is reporting database errors left and right.  Is your site under attack or what???

I've been a system admin for nearly 10 years and never seen anything this bad before.

Best wishes,
Paul Lowrance

I'm also a sysop for a major corp and I would have to agree.

Someone is attacking your database...

I would suggest watching the logs to see who's been hitting the server so often. I would guess its a guest account(s) hammering it with requests from a spoofed IP. If you get the users IP its probably faked, but please make it public so we can further investigate.

I hope this is resolved soon as it is greatly reducing the ease of use.
(that and I keep losing messages)

Well,
I am already working on this problem now and
the problem is, that I have to find out the IP
number, which is doing the most traffic.

As my ISP has unfortunately only a basic
Stats package, which does not show IP numbers,
this is now a major problem to find out the IP numbers,
where the most traffic is generated.

It could also be, that the 100 most recent postings
now on the frontpage cause such a huge database queries
calls...

I will reduce them now to 10 to see, if this helps...

Regards, Stefan.

Personally I would recommend using a web host that at least has cPanel. I've used really good and highly recommended inexpensive host http://www.bethehost.com for years. They offer tons of bandwidth for a few bucks a month, cPanel with extensive logging, server IP banding, etc.

and proccessing power for something else... Why bog down a forum?

I've been getting this error when accessing threads ... it's completely random.

User 'hartiberlin1' has exceeded the 'max_questions' resource (current value: 70000)
/mounted-storage/home4/sub002/sc11940-GNVW/overunity/Sources/Load.php
1971

hope this helps find the problem.

I get the same thing as bastonia.

I seems your site is receiving more than 70,000 quiries per hour (talk about overunity) as per your ISP setting of max_questions under your sole username of hartiberlin1. Ask your ISP to increase max_usernames to 3 and use hartiberlin1, hartiberlin2 and hartiberlin3. There are a few other things you would have to do as explained on this page I found through goog...

http://drupal.org/node/38996

The 10 posts limit is not helping either. What a bummer.

Someone is definitely bombarding your site with requests.
I think you should ban users one by one until you find the culprit by process of elimination. The cause of this board outways the rights of any one person to use it or abuse it.

I'm also a seasoned lan/wan Admin, and I don't know of ANY ISP that would not have their "livelyhood" "Protected" in some way.
Either Someone is Lazy over there Stephan, or you may have just talked to the wrong person.
My guess is:icmp flood, oversized packets or runts / fragments from a source that's "bouncing" through a few unsuspecting public subnets to cover the tracks.
I'd call over to the ISP Stephan, and try to get someone else on the phone that Wants to help, or knows what they are doing.

Best luck sir,
-art
