Hypothetical question..... magnet design/shape
« on: August 22, 2007, 11:02:02 PM »
Greetings all.. I was just sitting here thinking about magnet shapes when a few profound thoughts came into my head about magnet shapes and magnetic configurations.

What would the magnetic field of a hollow pyramid shaped magnetic array look like? Lets say you were to take 4 triangle shaped plate magnets, for the sides,  and a square shaped magnet, for the base,  all with their north pole facing inward to form a perfect pyramid. AND what shape of material/magnet would be able to take advantage of this magnetic field inside the pyramid to become self propelled..... if possible..? If for instance it was to be connected to a spindle entering from the top of the pyramid.

Has anyone experimented much with hollow magnet shapes and their inner magnetic fields? ;)

i can only theorize here, as i hav eno way to actually examine the flux patterns INSIDE the pyramid,

 on the outside they would look like the normal plate looked, a bowled-out S-pole triangle.
and basically on the inside they would push agianst each other assuming they were all the same strength

im imagining it looking like a meshy-blur in the corners where all the flux lines are compressed.

and have arcs of flux emanating from each corner to the next aroumd the pyramid, hten another set of arcs fomming out of the floor like upside down bowls pushing up on the lines above it.

the center i think would be like a vertivle column of intense N flux pushing outward in everydirection trying to push the sides of the pyramid apart (so it would need to be tied together or something) and this culumn would go downward until it hit the flux from created by the floor - then it would choose the corner of least resistance to connect to at the bottom;

thats how im thinking it would look,.  if you dropped a N sphere magnet inside of that, im not really sure what would happen.....
