screwed .5 Fluid assisted lift

Few years ago I was following Webby with his Screwed project and took a step back from the packets and air pressures concepts he was working with.  I wanted to see if there was a way to continuously shift the water right and left and place that on a lever and fulcrum.  Starting with a Archimedes screw pump to shift the water horizontally as the water moves through the tube it always seeks its own level so the energy to move the water is = the rotation of the screw and not the amount of water being moved.   the picture shows the basic idea 1 full wrap on the left is used as a reservoir 1 transfer wrap to shift the water to the right and a 3rd wrap on the right again used as a reservoir.  If the left wrap is pre-filled with water using energy to rotate the screw 1 turn moves the water into the transfer wrap and another full turn on the screw moves the water all the way to the right wrap/reservoir.  reverse the direction 2 full turns and the water always seeking its own level moves back to the left. Adding a 2nd transfer loop not shown in the picture from right to left and this screw becomes continuous and able to rotate in one direction.

There are some draw backs to the above wrap pattern.  The number of cylinder rotations per cycle (water down and Back) is 4.  When looking at the formula for horse power is HP = Torque X RPM / 5252.  If we were able to reduce the number of wraps we would improve performance.


Another draw back is, It is fairly difficult to manufacture all the wraps on the cylinder.
The water can become segmented into different wraps over time when the water is shifted left to right and the level is oscillating up and down while speed is increased.


The advantage is the entire amount is shifted from left all the way to the right on the lever.

There is a little trapeze artist that is also the one who sells Balloons at the circus. In fact they sell so many that when she rides her unicycle around the ring she needs to fill the inner tube of the unicycle 1/2 full of water to keep her from floating away.  As she pedals the water flows through the inner tube always remaining in the bottom 1/2 of the inner tube.  The rim of the tires center line is perpendicular to the ground. One day she takes a wrong turn and finds herself going downhill faster and faster and nails a park bench bending the rim of the tire on the pedal and hub assemble at a 45 degree angle.  The top of the rim is now against the left pedal in the top dead center of its stroke.  The bottom of the rim is against the right pedal at the bottom dead center of its stroke.  The bottom 1/2 of the rim from the hub down to the lower right pedal is filled with water.

Lets pedal the tire 180 degrees.  Looking from the back, as we press down on the left pedal the water starts to seek is own level moving through the inner tube.  As the left pedal moves 180 degrees so now the left pedal is at bottom dead center of its stroke. The rim is now at a 45 degree angle going from the lower left pedal up to the right through the hub and to the right pedal now at its tdc.  All the water is now from the hub and lower left half of the hub.  A full cycle with this configuration would then take anther 1/2 turn to move the water back to the right.

In 1 full turn the water shifts from the lower right to the lower left and back.  The power required to do this is the torque to turn the pedals times the number of rotations per cycle/min / 5252. 


The water is never lifted and moved to its different right and left positions.  The screw drive with the fluid assisting by always seeking its own level takes .5 rotations to move from right to left. Thus the name screwed .5 Fluid assisted lift.

Webby come on down you are the next contestant on the price is right.  Webby was kind enough in another post to calculate the weight of water in a 9ft diameter wheel 1 ft wide filled half full of water. That was just under 1 ton.  The wheel on the price is right's big spin is close to the size of this 9ft by 1 ft cylinder.


Webby steps up to the big spin an pulls as hard as he can and the wheel tilts at a 45 degree canter. The wheel spins 1 full time and lands on $1.00.  The crowd cheers as a ton of weight was shifted form right to left and back and not a drop of water was lifted.

Recapping the number of turns for the screw is reduced from 4 to 1. 


The difficult manufacturing of the tubes and wraps is simplified to a 9ft by 1 ft cylinder mounted at a 45 degree canter on a boat trailer axle able to support the 1 ton of weight.


Since the cylinder has only 1 wrap the water cannot become segmented into different wraps. 


The disadvantage is the water weight is spread from the hub outward on the lever, not all the weight is shifted completely to the right.

Does anyone have the formula to calculate the optimum head height?  Max Angle the lever can tilt and still be able to return to center?


There is a limit on the max angle the lever can drop and still be able to tilt in the opposite direction when the weight is shifted to the opposite end of the lever.  This is because the mass moves both down and to the right. 


The extreme example would be if you had a 6 ft lever mounted in the center of and 8ft wall.  Start with the lever horizontal and a mass balanced in the center.  Insert an imaginary line perpendicular to the lever now pointing at 12 o'clock. As the mass is moved to the right the lever rotates clockwise 90 degrees until the lever is now vertical and the imaginary line perpendicular to the lever is now at 3 o'clock.  No matter how far straight up the lever the weight is lifted it will never tilt back to the left (counter clockwise).
