**Course Offerings- ***Tutoring*-tutoring is offered in math classes at any level from 8^{th} grade through 12^{th} grade levels. (pre-Algebra to Calculus). It is also offered in Chemistry, History and ELA.

*Audit*– auditing enables the student to select a specific unit or units from a course to study a specific subject without having to engage in the full course.

*Full Course*-this would be the same as a full year high school college prep class.

*Home School*-This would be a full college prep home school course load. 5 classes per year, 9th-12th grade level

The following are the areas of instruction, support and tutoring being offered. Within each category, there are several selections for learning

*Note: while all classes have been taught in a home school setting, any class marked with an * indicates staff has taught this in a Massachusetts public school setting*

**Mathematics **

Standards are from NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics). The class will be led by teachers who have taught all of the below classes* at a high school level in public schools.

The staff has over 25 combined years of mathematics instruction in public schools at grade levels 9-12.

**Pre Algebra***-This class will prepare the student for success in Algebra 1 and further in their mathematics journey. Topics covered will be basic computation: fractions, percents, decimals, computation with negative numbers, solving simple equations, order of operation. The idea of this class is to build a solid foundation of fluency in mathematics.

**Interactive Math Program (IMP 1**)*-This class is an interactive experience that incorporates subjects from across the spectrum of the math experience. Although it is primarily designed to function as an Algebra 1 class, it also follows strong threads in probability, chance operations, Geometry and statistics-some topics that are more sophisticated than a standard 9^{th} grade class. There is a strong emphasis on writing in this class, and use of manipulatives are stressed.

**Algebra 1***– This is the traditional Algebra 1 class as usually taught in 9^{th} grade. It covers order of operation, simple algebraic equations, multi step algebraic equations, solving proportions, graphing linear equations, linear inequalities, exponents, scientific notation, factoring, and simple quadratics will be covered. This class is the foundation of all math classes to come. Mastery is stressed.

**Geometry*-** This is the traditional 10^{th} grade class. It covers number lines and measurement, the Pythagorean Theorem and the distance formula, the midpoint formula, parallel lines and angles, proving triangles congruent, triangle inequalities, quadrilaterals, polygons, area, volume, circles, ratio and proportion, introduction to trigonometry

**Algebra 2*-** This is the traditional 11^{th} grade class. It covers quadratics and parabolas, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences, conic sections

**Pre Calculus and Introduction to Calculus* – **This is a hybridization of senior (12th grade) math class offerings. Advanced trigonometry, logarithmics, exponential functions, limits and an introduction to differentiation and integration will be covered.

**Science**

**CBPS*** An introduction to high school science, this class would cover Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Astronomy/Space Studies in one quarter units to cover a full year’s learning.

**Chemistry**– This class will cover a full year college prep high school Chemistry class. Guest scientists and educators will aid in experiments both indoors and outdoors.

**English and Language Arts**

**Shakespeare* –** This class will look at the major works of Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet. Critical textual analysis and creative re-enactments will be integral to the understanding of each play. In addition, important film adaptions will be watched and critiqued in comparison to the original text. Fluency in the Shakespearean language will be the goal of this class.

**Modern Literature 1 and 2**-This class will look at some of the classics of modern literature-Utopian vs Dystopian themes will form the backbone of much of the class. Texts will include both novels and plays: Lord of the Flies, 1984, A Brave New World, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds, Harold and Maude, Heart of Darkness, Siddhartha, The Crucible, Inherit the Wind, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Things They Carried will be among the selections.

**Creative Writing**-This class will enable the student to expand as a writer. From impromptu blurbs to full essays to short stories, the student will develop skills to expand their written output, no matter what level they are at currently.

**Public Speaking and Debate*** – This class will teach the student to speak effectively in front of an audience. Persuasive, informative, entertaining-the student will use *pathos*, *logos* and *ethos* to get their point across effectively. In the debate portion, students will employ the skills used above to effectively debate their points in a set format with the goal of increasing their analytical reasoning.

**Science Fiction as Literature 1 and 2** – This class will look at both the novel and short story form of writing, and will analyze both the little known and better known works in the field. Bradbury, Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, Lem, Vonnegut, Le Guin, Tolkien, Martin…some important literature rarely seen in school curriculae since the 1970’s.

**History**

**Ancient Egypt** **and Sumer*-**This class will investigate the history of Ancient Egypt and Sumer. A study of hieroglyphics will enable the student to read simple Egyptian texts. Primary sources will be used for most of the information given. The legacies of these 6,000+ year old civilizations, and the influence on later societies will be our thesis. Gilgamesh, the oldest know novel in human history will be a focus of the Sumerian unit.

**Ancient Greece*** – From the dark ages of Greece to their eventual fall to Rome, the art and literature of Greece still resonate throughout the modern world. The mythology of the gods and goddesses are embedded in our culture. The development of the city-state, origins of democratic government and cultural and artistic landmarks will form the basis for this class. Readings will include the Iliad, the Odyssey, writings of Socrates and Plato, and a study of the myriad variants of Greek philosophy will be integral to the understanding of the ancient Greeks. Selected films will supplement the readings.

**Ancient Rome*** – Rome inherited the legacy of Greece through military conquests and annexations, and took the Greek model of society and created an empire. Though much of the Greek influences remained, we will look at primary sources and see how events like the Punic wars framed the rise and fall of an empire. Primary sources will be stressed. A small unit on reading and writing in Latin will be included.

**European History*-**This will cover the primary events in European History from the 1400s until the Berlin Wall went up and the Cold War. All countries will be investigated to see how the different cultures managed to create everything from the beauty of the Renaissance to the horrors of WW1 and WW2.

**US History 1 and 2*-** Part 1 of this class will investigate the rise of the United States from colonial times through the revolution and Civil War to the prosperity and industrialization of the late 1800’s. Part 2 will take us from the Gilded Age of the late 1800’s through World War 1, the roaring 20’s, the depression, World War 2, the cold war and the Red Scare, the Civil Rights movement up to the near revolution of the hippie era. Film, primary sources and music will be integral components of this class.

**Arts**

**Music History*-** Classical, Jazz, Folk, Rock n Roll-all of these fields were influential and integral to their eras. This class will be an overview of some of the major artists in each movement. This will be a half year class involving listening, critical thinking, and written responses.

**Art History**-From the cave paintings of Lascaux over 17,000 years ago to the classical era, African and Asian, Renaissance, Impressionism, Dada and beyond, this will be a half year class with comparative and analytical essay writing integral to the class. This will be a half year class.

**Film Critique**– A history of film will combine with an overview of some of the most important films of the last century. We will look at the history of film as it developed from the turn of the century and watch and critique some of the more influential films from the earliest days until modern times. This will be a half year class.
