Electro Permanent Alnico Magnet Gripper
« on: April 09, 2015, 07:54:19 AM »
Saw this and thought it might be useful to someone in some way. It's not mine but they have the files available for free and a product for sale.

"...The main change is that we only use Alnico magnets now and instead of magnetizing those fully in either direction go from full magnetization to completely demagnetize..."

Sounds like it magnetizes and demagnetizes Alnico magnets allowing UAV's to pick stuff up so it's small and strong. Looks rather small for what is can lift so I don't really understand how it works. Sounds like it only uses power for a short second to either magnetize the Alnico magnet or demagnetize it. Not sure if this could be used in an OverUnity device or not so I thought I would pass it along.

I wonder how much energy it takes to magnetize/demagnetize.

The video says he is using a 5 volt power supply. Not sure what the amps are. Can't imagine it's much since it's designed to go on small flying UAV's so it has to be light. Definitely not using large car batteries or something like that.

The video is a little misleading since it looks like the huge chunk of metal he picks up is the Alnico material but it isn't. He posted some more images showing how small the magnets are that appear to be integrated into the device.

Thanks for the info Kator01 and kEhYo77. Robert Murray-Smith does some really cool stuff. Thanks for the video link.

So if he is switching the poles on an Alnico magnet with an electromagnet, can't just that be used to draw in another magnet then switch the alnco polarity at the right time to push the magnet away for rotating a motor?

If the permanent magnet is constantly pulling or pushing then maybe Lenz force in the coil is less of a problem since the permanent magnet keeps doing work for free in between polarity switching states?

Isn't this just the same as Edward Leedskalins permanent magnet holder?

Here is a relevant video
Improved Flynn Gap motor hybrid by Robert Murray-Smith

and a patent

It appears to be a more powerful system than  with Alnico alone!

Your right, the power looks good.

Not quite the same as a Leedskalins PMH. PMH needs constant electricity if no metal completes the circuit by touching the two open ends of the U shaped metal together. It also only holds indefinitely if metal is touching the open ends to complete the flux circuit.

If the Alnico stators are spaced fare apart enough from each other, then you get some pull and push for free while the rotor part is between stators. The question is can this free "inbetween time" be long enough and strong enough to yield more energy than it takes to do the Alnico pole switch. Or at least be more efficient than current generators are?

So is the Gripper more efficient in using less power? Maybe the strong neo's in the Murray-Smith device are causing a stronger reluctance in the Alnico to switch so it needs more power?

Gripper is 5v at 800mA

Robert Murray-Smith improved Flynn appears to be 12v at 10 amp.

Whats important is the time to magnetize.
I think Murray-Smith mentioned it takes microseconds.
But in Alnico case it takes close to a second.
