I hate reading headlines that are just pure foolishness, like it "runs on salt water" or "Electric Car Generates 680,000 WATTS!!!"   The bloody car doesn't "generate" anything.  It just has a novel type of battery that provides power.

Are we so stupid these days that we can't distinguish between "provide" and "generate?"

Are we so stupid these days that we can't distinguish between salt water and what chemicals are dissolved in the salt water?

What a BS web site to twist the meaning of the truth like that.

Instead of doing the Googling, I just read the comments.

Here is the bloody answer courtesy of Carl Kemp:

<<< Why don't we try a little honesty here for a change, hmmm? First, it wasn't oil cartels that ruined Tesla. It was the combination of a disaster in his showcase lab, plus the constant undercutting of his work by his old boss, Thomas Edison and his company, General Electric. Next, the power is NOT provided by the salt water, but by chemical changes in the metals or metallic salts placed in the water. Long story short: whatever you use to create the current will change chemically, and it will take more energy to undo that change than you got out of it. So it does not run on sea water. It runs on the metals (which have to be refined) that you have to put into the sea water. This is not the free lunch they make it out to be.  >>>

running a 920 HP motor ,I didn't read anything but the above posts here.

from my perspective ANYTHING that can feed a 920 hp ELECTRIC PONY needs a bit more attention ,especially if its cleared for use on public roads .

Thanks to the Portly Pigeon for this one....

Chet:

The 920 HP may be a fake-out, I am not sure.   Some possibilities:

1.  This type of salt-water battery really does have the capability to output 920 HP.

2.  The battery can't output 920 HP but the car has a big capacitor bank to support short bursts of acceleration and it's the cap bank that can output 920 HP for a short period of time,

3.  Even though the battery and/or cap bank can output 920 HP, the electric drive motors are not capable of outputting 920 HP.

I an going to assume that #3 is true, so the the whole dang dumb article is brain mush.

Chet, it's not the car itself, that's probably perfectly legit.  It's the article itself that is bullshit.  And that's an issue unto itself.

MH:

Back in my Dad's machine shop, we had a Blanchard grinder that utilized a 100 hp motor.  The motor alone was like 4 ft. tall and almost 3 ft. in diameter.  Even though we had all of the amps the electric company would provide at that time, all of the lights in the place would dim as that motor started up under no load, except start-up.

I am sure motor efficiency has improved since those days but...900 hp?  I really, really doubt that.  I used to own a 500 HP car that weighed 3,500 pounds and it was lightning fast.

If this electric vehicle used carbon fiber like the Tesla, and it was very light, 900 HP would be useless anyway.  The wheels would simply spin and spin.  I sense a lot of exaggeration here.

Bill:

It was probably a "dumb" motor from the "old days."  A big motor like that is almost a short circuit when it starts up.  Hence starting a long time ago (I think in the 1970s) they had MOSFET-based motor controllers that would chop the voltage feed to the motor at start-up to slowly ease it up to operational speed without causing a local brown-out.

I would assume a 900-horsepower modern motor that does not run at an insanely high speed would still be a big heavy beast, much too big for a car.

there's no part of 900 HP thats useless  :o

give it to me I'll use every pony...
to hit 217 MPH you would most definitely need that much HP ..like I said the Germans don't mess around.
@MH
regardless of the advertisement ,
very intriguing use of outa the box thinking and yes you were right the super caps store for on demand needs.
@Mags sure the Boyz at your place would be droolin over this one...I bet it has a motor on every wheel??

So are you saying that Burt Munro's 1920 Indian had 920 hp then?  He was able to go 205.67 mph using under 1,000 cc's. (1967)

I am just saying this is a lot (if it is true ) of unusable hp for a car like that.  To draw that much power, the wires to the motor would have to be as thick as your arm.
