Best electrolyte to use?
« on: March 29, 2008, 03:33:21 AM »
Has anyone here experimented with the different types of electrolyte? I have always used baking soda because if it get on my skin or in my eyes it won't mess me up like KOH will. I do believe KOH works much better though. I have been seeing now that some people are using White distilled vinegar in their cells. Has anyone here tried white distilled vinegar?

OK, so I tried the distilled white vinegar and the results were not that good. First I mixed it with water and it did not allow much room for hydrogen production, with about a 50/50 mix of distilled water and distilled white vinegar I was only pulling .3-.4 amps. I then put the cell directly into the vinegar and it only pulled .6 amps, hardly enough acidity, ONLy 5%, so I'm sticking to baking soda since it's the safest for me and the environment!

I have been testing with baking soda, but read about someone using sodium hydroxide aka lye/caustic soda. Not as safe as baking soda, but in small quantity in solution it should be fairly safe

Always wear eye protection(goggles at least) when working with lye solutions. Its not so safe if it splashes into your eyes.Baking soda solution would not normally warrent a trip to the doctor unless its hot at the time.I taught two years of chemistry labs at the college level(as a grad student). We always harped on safety.triffid

It may be safe but it is poor. anyway, the sodium bicarbonate degenrates to NaOH at the wrong
concentration. The Boyce system uses KOH and so does the Smacks booster. have a look at:

or the same address with  /Smack.pdf

I agree that KOH might be better stuff Just try to wear some kind of eye protection(goggles) at least when you are working with it.Best to err on the side of safety.I was told horror stories about those who got it in their eyes.triffid
