Simple Rocket Mass Heater.
« on: August 02, 2014, 06:39:50 PM »
Hi All,

It's almost fall, and temperature is droping down to 50's already in the morning.

Last winter was as low as -15deg, so I started to build this big rocket mass heater with a 6" feed tube.

I got enough wood to last two winters, but to burn it in a efficient way, the rocket mass heater is the best way to burn it.

Hi Tom, What is the reason for insulating the pipe? I am currently building  but what I have is done is wrap a 50' coil of copper tubing around my burner pipe, which is enclosed by a 100lb propane tank that I cut the top out of so it could slide down over top and rest in a 5 gallon pail filled with sand. The exhaust pipe is cut level with the top of the 5gal can about an inch above the sand.
I want to use the heat from the propane housing for space heating as well as using water circulated in the copper for in-floor heating.
Concentrating on a self feed mechanism right now.
Also the last vid  on the gasifier I've seen is #12 is this the latest?
Thanks for your work very inspiring.

Hi Shylo,

Insulating the pipe allows heat to build up in the pipe, this also cause cooler air to be pull into the lower area that sounds like a rocket engine.

Heat rise, so the greater the heat in the tube the more efficienct the complete burn.

The gasifier needs more work, due to low gas being produce for the size I will need to change some things around to run the engine.

Tom
Are these stoves able to burn green wood with out the usual creosote issues?
Also do you put a cold air [outside] intake manifold?

thanks for sharing your build.

Hi Chet,

These rocket mass heater burn everything even creosote issues, this is because of the gasifier effect in the system.
