I just completed my construction of the TL494 + TC4420 halfbridge driver board. Seems to work fine so far. ...

Nice job!

Thanks!

My new videos aren't really relevant to this thread, but this one may be of general interest anyway, especially since it has gotten my trolls to post their 5 thumbs-downs already:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChV7n0EY2h0

Meanwhile, I've been testing the 494 driver board using a small pot-core stepup transformer and a neon as load. I'm either connecting one end of the pot-core Primary to both drains and the other end of the Primary to the positive supply rail. Or, I'll connect each end of the Primary to a Drain and the Center Tap of the Primary to the positive supply rail.

In the scopeshot below CH1 and CH2 are the Gate signals from the twin 4420 chips, and CH3 is the common Drain signal using the first potcore hookup. (Remember Drain goes LOW when mosfets are ON). I have found that tuning can be tricky, in that sometimes one or the other of the 494 outputs collapses to a spike instead of a rectangular pulse. This may present a problem if one tries to tune without using the oscilloscope.

The Drain Snubbers using 22R 2W + 0.01 uF 1kV  are working well to absorb nastiness that could heat up and or damage the mosfets. I'm using IRF3205 mosfets and they are working well with the loads I have tried. Have not damaged anything in several hours of testing in all kinds of load conditions and current draw. (I have my PSU set to limit current at around 3 amps though.)

I have also installed a switch whereby I can select one of three different Timing Capacitors so I can cover a very broad frequency range. (Not shown on the Layout diagram.)

This is basically the Stalker circuit with the addition of the 1k pulldown resistors for the 494 open-collector outputs, and the Snubbers on each mosfet Drain, and the switch for Timing Capacitor choices.

An additional approach to FE/CE development - the (b) method?
« Reply #17222 on: May 23, 2017, 02:01:11 PM »
Posted the following in another form a few days back but it is likely relevant here as well. Food for thought!

 F.Y.I.

In the real world progressing from a great idea to a viable product, believe it or not, can be
relatively easy, a lot of fun and quite interesting. Developing a "new type of fuel-less generator"
has an added bonus in that it can be done semi-professionally at relative low cost.

 Briefly, an example scenario:

There are two development roads one can follow. Either the (a) iterative "cut and try" method, or,
what I'll term, (b) the mathematical engineering physics route; or preferably a healthy slice of both
 (a) plus (b).

Following only the (a) road, in my opinion, is quite valuable but quickly leads to a brick wall dead
end. Youtube is littered with videos of coils and light bulbs including, in some rare cases,
researchers attempting to educate other "seekers-of-knowledge" using a variety of primitive "aids" and
"self derived" gibberish. Out of the many thousands of videos and comment pages there are but a hand
full of "useful" demonstrations; and, more often than not, when their goal is reached the presenter moves
on to further (usually very quiet retirement) development. Without the (b) route there is generally not much in the
way of "value" to be had. We have all observed this over the years. I will address (b) further in a bit.

 Physical Hardware and T&M Equipment:

Device hardware; that is, for wire, electronic components, brass-board, enclosure, and so forth the expenditures
are minimal; likely less than a dining out for two with desert and drinks!

Fundamental design Test Equipment; an old laptop, (isolated) USB PC Oscilloscope, digital meter,
and battery again can be procured now days at very low cost. High voltage probes and other exotic
measurement devices can be easily fabricated with a little ingenuity.

Engineering Physics Tools (mathematics - multiphysics Computer Aided Engineering [CAE]):

Much, if not all, of the "alternate" energy theory, in my opinion, can be uncovered and disclosed
using conventional science with the assistance of modern engineering and physics tools that
are just now becoming available to us; the (b) route . Here are a few of the many examples:

Simulation Software: A Price and Performance for Everyone

Multiphysics for the masses. COMSOL wants to democratize simulation in the design process– TV-report > ENGINEERING.com

 https://www.comsol.com/products

Gaining access to these tools can be cost effective as well - take a course at your local educational
institute; invest in an "off lease or surplus" HP Z820 Workstation; obtain demo or student versions
of CAE software; put a business plan together and run it by your banker or rich uncle... A maybe "unseen
additional bonus" involves developing a valuable "skill set" that can be applied in many other disciplines.

There is enough valid evidence of viable alternate energy devices but to make it actually happen
we need to do something besides light bulbs on Youtube, bicker about who's theory is correct or
what "method or technique" is the best.

With minimal expense and a little diligent effort, I firmly believe following the (b) route will bring
success for all and, if not right away, it will be fun and very educational at worst.

Plus; I see enough intelligence out here, I'm optimistic we can do it... we do however need a
forum board where you can publish formulas and other science material in a usable fashion.

 Thanks for reading
PS - My new 32 core servers arrive tomorrow so I too will now also "move to a very quiet retirement" [development].

 FIN

For many on the fora, tinkering around with electronic components and associated test equipment and software to develop skills in practical electronics is the primary source of enjoyment. The assumed primary purpose for doing this - to build a free energy device - for many, eventually becomes of secondary importance I would suggest.

However, as fun or educational as tinkering with electronics may be, it would really be nice to build a self running device that works. Instead of spending thousands of hours, months and years, without anything useful to show for it. Some positive results would also provide us with further motivation to continue in the future.
In any case,  I'm dedicated to this cause, and will stick with it, come hell or high waters. As that is what I came to this world to re- discover, re-invent, and improve apon, once it's working.  And I will get it working.
Thanks to all for your help and cooperation. We are a team, and a good one at that. Regardless of results.

TK:  I'll study your circuit and get back to you on it a little later. Thanks for posting it.

Very inspirational Nick.  I find myself agreeing with you 100%.

Also slowly beginning to understand bits of pieces of what Nelson has achieved.
Hopefully good things will come of it.

More on my 494 driver circuit, which is basically the Stalker/verpies circuit with a few mods.

I changed the Snubbers to 56R 2W + 20nF 1kV, and I put 0.1 uF poly film caps across pins 1 and 4 (supply and ground) of the 4420 driver chips. I also put MUR1560 high current ultrafast diodes in series between the Drains of the mosfets and the Load. And finally another 1 uF poly film cap between + rail and Source ( - rail) near the mosfet sockets.

All of this keeps most of the spikes from kicking back into the mosfets, so they now don't get excessively hot even on their small heatsinks. The Snubbers do get hot from absorbing and dissipating the spikes so I know they are doing their job.

This morning I managed to destroy the NE-2 I was using for a test load on the output of the small potcore transformer. I have never seen a neon fail like this before: there was a bright red-purple glow then "psst" and the light went out. On post-mortem exam, I saw that one of the electrodes in the neon actually melted enough to bend over and contact the glass envelope, which then punctured and cracked. This was at around 40 kHz, with power to the Drain-Load-Source circult supplied by an external 12 volt battery, and low Dead Time setting on the driver board. Mosfets and Snubbers just warm.

Can anyone comment on how wide the pulse width for the tesla/katcher drive is typically set at to get a decent hv field to light a nearby florescent. I started with 500 ns pulse it would not light anything, i then increased the pulse width to around 4 us, and it does pretty good but not the best.

Thanks for the update TK, as well as posting your video links.

Although Stalker has been at this for a while now, he does not show the results of most of his drivers tests once connected to the rest of the device, nor, if his latest devices will even self run, or not. So, I think that it would be best to take all these latest tests with a grain of salt, until further proof of their working are known and confirmed. Which is what I'm up to now.

In Stalkers latest diagram he shows no jumper wire between the 28t yoke secondary and the 3t coil. It is also showing the 28t coil reversed from the yoke primary coil directions.  I see NO earth ground wire connected to the grenade/yoke coils.

So, TK as you are seeing now, it's not easy to get the TL494 circuit and fet drivers to work without heating of the mosfets, and still produce a clean signal without interference or overheating.

I am running the Stalker's normally used snubbers system, which are the 10k resistor to the gates, and two facing 18v zeners, 1k resistors along with the MUR1560 diodes from source to drains. If that snubber set up works for him it should also work for us, as well.
However, I'm now using the Pinoytech set up for the TL494 circuit, as shown below. Which is a mod of the TopRuslan TL system. So, I've combined the Stalker, TopRuslan, and PinoyTech set ups, all in one.

I'm also replacing all my filter capacitors, and voltage regulators, as most of them got damaged when I reversed the input polarities by accident. And I'm now also using the 104J caps for most of the filter caps, as well. As I see that it's best to use the exact same components as in the diagrams, when possible. And am also separating the inputs to the TL494, and fet drivers, and will not be shared inputs as I had done at one time, previously.

Nick, the Snubbers I am talking about aren't the Gate protection zeners or associated resistors. They are a 10 or 20 nF ceramic high voltage capacitor in series with a low value, 22R or 56R resistor, from Drain to Source. This system dissipates the backspikes from inductive loads and prevents them from heating up the Mosfet body diodes, a major source of heating. You might consider trying something like that on your system. Also I must note, once again, that the schematic you posted is using IRF3205 mosfets, which have very low on-state resistance and thus will not heat up much in normal operation. I'm using them myself.
(Just checked with my local supplier, he is out of stock of IRFP260n and wants almost four dollars each for them... time to make another internet order I guess.)

   TK:
At one time I also blackened and burnt out the small neon bulb that I use as an indicator. If the HV arcs are allowed to make contact with the bulb long enough it will burn it out, even without cracking it.
Concerning the snubbers, they seem to work OK as they are. FETs get hot possibly due to the way that I had my connections from the yoke and grenade outputs. I've now corrected that and will see if that takes care of the fet overheating issue.
I also have to pay about 4 bucks apiece for my IRFP260N, or I'd get them by the kilo.

You may need to place a higher load to see if the FETs still don't overheat. I use 3 or 4 100w bulbs at the grenade's full bridge rectifier outputs, normally, or higher loads. If the Kala coil system is what you're aiming at.
I love your cheers and applause. It gave me a good laugh...

Sounds like you are good to go again Nick. Don't forget to limit your power supply current whilst experimenting, at least until you are happy with the waveforms.

Hoppy: I will rewind my chokes as they have been frying their insulation layers, also. Thanks for reminding me.

TK: I meant the Kapa coils in my last post, not Kala, but I could not correct that as there was no "modify" button, then.
I guess that the Kapa coils set up is your intention to replicate?
I'm also supposing that Kapa means the Kapanadze type coils, perhaps. As well as the Kapagen, etz... are take offs on it. There are lots of videos on that, but no self runners other than Tariel's original set up. Which perhaps was sold to a guy in Brazil. That guy made two videos, showing his purchased original Kapanadze coil device. So, Tariel got some money, at last... as he was not giving anything away for free, and would rather take it to his grave. Although he says that he got stopped from further development or sales of that type of system. Who knows...

Hi!
I have found a strange phenomena with the Sergey device ..
Using a 340nF capacitor as a series resonance cap and a lower value like 68nF on the granata output  at a certain frequency ... like 19Khz or 22Khz a phenomena appears.
Using scope probes between inductor and ground and between grenade output and ground at a certain key frequency the amplitudes on both probes decrease but from tha 19Khz jumps to 40-54Khz
I've put 3 white dots on the screenshots. This screenshot is not recent , on recent experiments that "doubled frequency" sinewaves are perfect sine. This effect is not dependent by the ground wire.
Does anyone have any idea why is this happening?

    Zalmoxis:
Are you using variable trim pots to adjust the frequency and duty cycle on a TL494 IC circuit?
If so, you may have damaged or partially burnt them out at certain points on the pot(s).

That is one of the problems that I'm dealing with now. At full duty cycle my 20k trim pot works ok, scope signals are stable and I can vary the frequency no problem. BUT, trying to adjust the duty cycle makes the signals on the scope go haywire.
This was caused by me reversing the input connections by accident, which damaged the 20k pot, along with both (12v and 15v) voltage regulators as well as some of the regulator's filter caps.  So, I'm fixing that problem now.
Perhaps you have similar "phenomena".  If so, maybe check your trim pots.
Let me know if that helps to find the problem, or not.
I've been getting to know my TL494 circuit, fet drivers, and such, with their problems and strange effects more intimately, now.
Trying hard not to pull my hair out by the roots...
