Al:

That video of the guy flying is incredible.  I hope it is not faked somehow...it looks real to me.  Humans are not supposed to be able to make enough horsepower to do that...although, I think it was the Gossamar Condor pedaled powered plane flew like 20 years ago and that was not supposed to be able to happen either.

Bill

This video was all over the news several months ago .
He has a webaite and you can probably  buy those birdwings and fly !! Oh coarse someone will say it's fake and we all know that we as experimenters won't believe it till we do it ourselves:)
here's how he did it . it started out as a Dream .
The heart of the system is an Android smartphone. It processes Jarno's arm acceleration and computes the corresponding motor output. The phone is connected to a Seeduino ADK microcontroller, which connects to two Wii Motion Plus and a Wii Nunchuck. These are used to measure the acceleration, motion and all the different parameters required for making the calculations needed for the wing flapping.
After his first successful test, Jarno is ecstatic:: "I have always dreamed about this. But after eight months of hard work, research and testing it all payed off."
Horsepower is just a matter of pulleys like we can lift 1000's of pounds with the help of a couple of pulleys and some rope.If you have ever seen an albatross try to fly and do it then you see it takes big wings to lift that heavy bird.iI have seen them on the beach run and stumble and roll and then run again and take off.

this was an early prototype here  . very cool But They said it was FAkE and an experiment for a Movie TRixTer!
Seems To elaborate for a prop in a low budget movie but look like they tried andd failed so why not make a movie instead .

  gadget,
there might be a way to make wings work. Only lift a part of the wing and lift it at an angle.
Then when that part of the wing is pushed down, it would have air underneath it which could flow outward under the wing creating more lift.
This would allow for the possibility of using leverage to get more work out of a downward stroke.
If you watch birds fly, they don't lift the tips of their wings, probably saves a lot of energy that way.
I think that's how the Wright Brothers got their plane to fly. They saw how a bird's wings worked and allowed for the wings on their airplane to twist. Before that, all wings were made of a rigid design.
Today, they are now called wing flaps and ailerons.

I'll bet it is.

Calculate the horsepower needed to get that amount of weight up, to displace
that amount of air with such an inefficient device. There is no athlete who
could achieve it.

It reminds me of the human  powered flight competition using an efficient wing:

yea another inventacom experiment , The humanbirdwinds were all over the networks and had everyone fooled . Still it migh be possible one day with the right motor .Now i know Lasersaber Flys anytime he wants with his self made paramotor (100cc electric with lifopo battery packs and a big prop on his back.
) and that thing he can strap it on his back and literally lean backwards and thats fan will  hold him up from falling backwards with his weight on it ..A para sail is the best way to fly and no pilots licenses needed !Strap some bird wings on that baby!

You actually don't need a motor if you used the power of your legs to flap the wings. But it have to be wings made of bird feathers, since the aerodynamics needed for flying like a bird calls for the structure of real bird feathers. And you have to take off from an elevated position or down a slope.

If you make wings with a ten meter span made of a slender titanium frame and a triple row of swan feathers and applied the down stroke force by transporting the muscle power of your legs up to the wings, it would obviously work.

I say obviously, because I saw a movie clip in the seventies depicting a young man taking off from an elevated position inside a sports arena with wings made of real birdfeathers.
The boy was constantly pumping with his legs which were transporting the movement through a mechanical leverage system attached to his legs up to the wings. He seemed to weigh no more than about 45 kilos and was obviously due to exhaustion forced to land after two rounds around the arena. Still he succeded to keep a constant distance from the ground these magical two minutes.

The secret lies in applying the force of your legs. The number of moves from sitting to standing position that you are able to perform without getting exhausted equals the number of times you are able to move the big wings downward using same leg power.

So the force needed to create the neccessary downward movement of such big wings is ready available by using the strength of your legs, and in combination of a fairly low body weight the feat of flying with your own wings is fully feasable.

The only problem is that all big birds need good upward winds to stay in the air for any longer periods, and this boy was trapped within the calm confines of the arena, thus spending too much energy to stay aloft any more than those two minutes, which by the way was impressive enough.

Quote
Ornithopters On August 2, 2010, Todd Reichert of the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies piloted a human-powered ornithopter named Snowbird. The 32 metres (105 ft 0 in) wingspan 42 kilograms (93 lb) aircraft was constructed from carbon fibre, balsa, and foam. The pilot sat in a small cockpit suspended below the wings and pumped a bar with his feet to operate a system of wires that flapped the wings up and down. Towed by a car until airborne, it then sustained flight for almost 20 seconds. It flew 145 meters with an average speed of 25.6 km/h (7.1 m/s) [21] Similar tow-launched flights were made in the past, but improved data collection verified that the ornithopter was capable of self-powered flight once aloft.[22][23][24]
And that's the first verified _actual_ human-powered ornithopter flight. To claim otherwise, without proof.... well, it's just not right, that's all.

TinselKoala,

you are of course fully correct, but if you are referring to my post above, it was really not intended to be a claim. Sorry if I made you think that. I just wanted to tell you guys about a fabolous experiment filmed in the seventies and since I am and was quite well versed in the rather small abilities of that time to produce a trick film of this quality level, I was greatly intrigued by the film clip.

And if you think logically, the push power created by your legs are equal to same force applied downwards when transmitted to the wings.

My input was solely to add some intriguing information that hopefully would create some interest and discussion, since the contemporary aviation research are so hopelessly additcted to rigid or semi rigid non feather constructs.  It's like aviation science today avoid studying the amazing aerodynamics created by bird feathers on a micro scale. And when it comes to propelling itself forth by use of flapping wings, feathers are the only solution worth studying, since flat-wing constructs misses the very idea behind bird winged flight.

So there is no claim here, just a childish curiosity about something that actually could work.

   Gwandau,
Some people don't find mechanics very interesting. But what you suggested about leg power made me think of coxswains.
Those guys who (and gals) who go sculling. By combining the push of the legs with the pull of the back and arms, a lot of force.
I would think though that to attempt a wing design that simplicity would be most important as it would allow the weight of the wings to be kept to a minimal.
I checked out this info on hang gliders and some lose 1 meter in altitude for every 17 meters of flight. Who knows, it might not be out of the question that one day someone will figure out how to fly. And don't be surprised if it's some hang glider.

Those flying squirels are pretty cool. One thing I've given thought to is that with a bird, the weight of it's own wing might help it to fly. Just like with perpetual motion, conserving energy by using the potential that is there more efficiently allows for things that we just accept unless we are crazy as those guys.

REAL WORKING MAGNET GRAVITY WHEEL

how to buy this prototype? ??? ?

I don’t know about buying it but why not building it?! It’s very simple yet quite clever.

Here is my version about how it works:
Setup: non-magnetic big wheel, ferromagnetic ball.
Blue-red handheld “magnet” is actually a permanent magnet and a coil powered by a small oscillator or on-off switch (probably at several hundred hertz) plus a battery (of course), all concealed inside.
Initially, considering the coil not powered, the permanent magnet holds the ball in place, in equilibrium on the rim of the big wheel. There are no forces to create angular momentum thus no rotation. :(

However, by powering the small coil so as it works additive to the existing magnetic field of the permanent magnet, the coil will now attract the ball to a slightly higher equilibrium point. The ball will always get there by spinning because that’s the least energy-consuming movement (it’s pretty much similar to why a ball will spin on the floor when thrown away, instead of translating on the floor; simple stuff – hope you’ve got it).
When ball spins and rises toward the new equilibrium point, the big wheel spins too, due to friction. Interesting enough, both ball and wheel spin in the same direction. That’s a slight issue since in order the whole motor/setup to run as presented, when coil is shut of, the ball has to at least slightly slide downwards against the now turning wheel or otherwise the big wheel would not rotate as seen. It’s because of angular momentum conservation but I suppose the readers already understand it or they don’t care much.

Nevertheless, the setup although inefficient as a motor is pretty clever, very fun and easy to build!
Good luck and if I got it right, please post here or send me pictures with your setup.

Best regards,
