Did anyone understand the reasoning as to how this runs freely?  Looks sort of fake if not funky at this point but I didn't understand it.  I need to listen again when I can crank up the sound...

My understanding is that inside every coil is a magnet which moves inside coil and induces current in coil.
All coils are connected with wire (white). Both (+ & -) leads are probably connected to metal axes.
At first motor is run by battery but when the current production is sufficient the motor runs on induced current.

But I'm very skeptical that this would ever work. Way to much losses and too weak coils to produce any remarkable amount of current.

IMHO much better version would be magnet on a spring which moves inside a vertical coil.

Short pulse trough coil every few seconds to pull the magnet down then let it swing up and down on the spring.
Or even better constant pulses to pulse coil with resonance of the spring.
Like jumping on the bridge, you need to jump at the right time and whole bridge will start oscillating.
This way you would put minimal amount of energy in the coil to sustain constant movement of magnet on the spring.

Do you think you can use the same coil to move the magnet and to get power out of the same coil?

Sure, must diy pulse motors works like that.

That pulse corresponds perfectly to what energy output you get from the coils after the pulse (+ loss). Loading the coils will break the magnets movement so more frequent pulses are needed to sustain the movement in the magnet = supply more energy as you take more energy.
