where to source toroid cores?

Does anyone have any advice on where to get hold of large toroid cores?

Say around 4-6"? 

I want to try some experiments with magnetic fields.

I'm thinking about trying to get hold of something with a soft iron core? Any idea how much that might cost? I need three in total.

Should I just use a plastic toroid?

Suggestions and advice appreciated!

Youre pretty vague in your requirements so I guess that means youre unsure yourself.

You wont find that size core and certainly not in 'soft iron' unless you make it yourself.

If youre looking to make a big joule thief or anything that wants efficiency you will need a FERRITE CORE with HIGH PERMEABILITY (8000 - 15000 U).  W class ferrites are 10,000 and H class are 15,000 but the H class are becoming rarer and expensive.  J class is OK too and 5000U.

Yeah thanks. I'm just trying to create the strongest mag field possible with the limited resources I have. 

Apparently using a permeable core gives a huge increase in potential magnetic flux strength.

This is a brand new hobby of mine so I'm trying to research and learn as I go.  :)

Ohh... You want to experiment also magnetic field with toroid, maybe Heins effect ? Actually I work (in secret, with my one theory) about this effect...

So, I have several suppliers for this...

High permeability such as the "Nanoperm" in 203mm X 2mm thickness is what many, including myself, are looking for. Magnetec will charge me $300.00 for theirs and that's just too steep for me. Anyone here in the states who could find such a torroid would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard it mentioned that its possible make your own cores..
Does anyone have any information on this or can someone point me in the right direction?

Obviously I'm willing to accept the overall design will be less efficient by doing this. I don't want to shell out lots of money before I've had a chance to test out my design...

Unfortunately I don't know "cheap" High permeability toroid...

Metglas, Nanoperm, and high µ low loss core are very expensive in nature...
So, if anyone have cheap "Nanoperm", I'am interested also, but I don't think it exist LOL...

Check out Alibaba.com for cores. Alibaba is like a catalog of Chinese companies from this to that.

Ha, yeah. Registered with Ali earlier. I found one place that does min runs of 10.. asking for samples is kinda cheeky but its all for a good cause ; )

Especially in China, they want your business. Dont think of it as a handout. Its a real part of R&D.   Why order 10 or 1000 if they are not working for you. ;]  If it were an electric bike, ehh, samples not available. lol  But cores? 

Try to order samples from different companies. Even if they want you to pay for the sample, at least you wont end up with many that are not good for you. ;] Get several sizes. Find what works.

But at least we have these sources none the less.

I grabbed a couple of 4 inch circular composite ferrite toroid cores on ebay for about $12 dollars each.

I tried and failed to make torus shapes for my windings from papier mache (this took hours, ruined my bunker and they fell apart when I tried to peel them off the die/mould).

However there are cool videos about making your torus toroids on Youtube, and some interesting winding configurations.

They range from the mundane to the fabulously zany (mark rodin's coils being interesting mathematically in terms of the winding configuration which he calls vortex maths). www.markorodin.com

I have two ideas for cheap sources of iron.Wire clothes hangers which may be in your closet. second magnetic black sand from the river mixed with a resin that hardens.You have to use a mold to pour the mixture in before it hardens.I had a friend who used black sand and resin.Wire clothes hangers would give you something to work with quickly.I have no data on numbers.Just two ideas on sources of cheap iron for your project.Of course a magnet should stick to your wire hangers.I have seen the magnetic black sand resin mixture after it hardens.A magnet sticks to it just fine. triffid

If you have done any gold panning you should have seen black sand.Use a magnet to separate the sand that is magnetic from the nonmagnetic black sand.It is about half and half in my experience.triffid
