No. The spring will be compressed according to the magnetic field available. This field through the plates are provided by the magnet alone. There is no reason why the magnet should be stronger or weaker than itself. The total magnetism are not changed even if it is guided in different directions.
However the plates separates due to magnetism, it is because the magnetism are guided better this way, and (isolated to the magnetism alone) the magnet must use more energy to escape the air gap than it gained to enter it. This extra energy are provided by compressed the spring.
