    As you can  notice so easy,the arm's difference of the pendulum,is the origin for a limited rotation(around 15 times...)...due to friction.

   The round plate ("heavy hub") ,is playing as an in-out power storage/rotational inertia...simply a flywheel.

   This kind of "game" is easy,plain and promising,if we keep in mind the arm's variability,functioning as a basic image.

   Try to "flow" your imagination about this simple experience ,and use it wisely...

     it's the shortest design (two masses,only...) , of a possible gravity (heavy hub ) self-powered pendulum with a variable arm , if we imagine in some manner , the "self" short arm-long arm commutation in the top point...but this time introducing a little "difference" :  an additional helpful arm variation , due to the centrifugal effect ...with a spring.

Very good Jacob but it stops due to the remaining chaos in the system where the variable arm needs to be timed possibly by a microprocessor and some hall sensors.
At some point it swings in the wrong direction causing a braking action if this movement was suppressed the result would most likely be more gain.
Then it actually looks very promising.

Your comment is about the up-here movie.
My comment was about the next possible test...if we introduce an additional variability due to the centrifugal effect/sling (if we have in mind the trebuchet...).
It's a different "movie"/test...of a rotating inverted pendulum (or free falling eccentered mass under the influence of gravity and centrifugation ).

A spring can play the variance and the control of the pendulum/"cranking " arm...

     Between others , it's a fundamental cosmic "mechanical clock".
     This time the swinging motion of a pendulum (classical mechanical clock) hand powered by a falling mass , is  substituted with a continuous ( self powered ) rotation of a variable leverage...

.....playing gravity field and rotational inertia , as a "copy" of the Earth-Moon motion , can be tested with two masses ( Earth , Moon ) , a connection arm and a spring.

     So , we can test a pendulum with a "self" variable arm playing gravity fall and centrifugal out-in "run" on radius/variable arm (tangential acceleration and radial acceleration ).
     For a "common" pendulum , we add two temporary motion "storages" :
     -a heavy hub related to gravity in-out rotational motion
     -a spring on the radius/arm to play long arm/short arm , due to centrifugal "pressure".
     Simply : we play addition and substraction of the centrifugal effect , every half turn ...or "self" long arm-short arm rotating( ??? ) pendulum?
