Cogless Alternator

I'm not sure what Butch Lafonte called his, but I remember a huge discussion where he (and others) were building a generator that had a rotor magnet that spun about a shaft, and the stator had an inner and outer part for directing flux as it spun.  The design eventually moved to a design that looks something like the attached gifs.

My questions are:

1)  Was there any reason the builders stopped working on this idea?
2)  The field produced by the induced current in the coils doesn't look like it'd interfere with the rotor action, what do you guys think?
3)  Would laminated silicon steel work for the stator, as I can't find ferrite?

The images below represent the same concept from two reference frames, the first is from the stator's view, and the second is from the rotor's view.  I really want to build this, and if I could get a ton of these on the same shaft, I'm hoping that a heavy flywheel will keep it running for a while, and only keep the flywheel going, since the shaft won't feel a 'load' I think...

These are the times I wish I wasn't 21 and working at McDonald's, so I could afford these endeavors!  Haha.  Being in college is sucking my money away.  ;)

How true. I feel for you. Isn't there a way to get a scholarship or something? Sorry, I can't help at this time. I really wish I could.

Thanks for the support Omnibus, but unfortunately my major is Business Administration, even though science is my favorite thing to study in my free time.  I'm so glad for the internet to connect like-minded people for these projects and sharing ideas.  Since I don't know how to simulate Lenz Law in FEMM (I'm guessing you can't since it's not a dynamic calculator, only static problems), I put magnets where the 'opposing field' induced by the coils would be.  It doesn't seem to effect the rotor at all, and goes around it...

Anyone else building something like this?

I'm going to try to build this during summer.

I know someone extremely talented and dedicated in his OU interests who has an MBA also. He's still 24 but he's now taking courses in electrical engineering science. So, maybe you can follow his example, if the finances are not too tight, of course.

I think I actually will do that.  I've been interested in electrical engineering for a while, it definitely wouldn't hurt to have a few of those courses for use in OU research.  I wish I could just magically have this stuff here right now though, haha.  Is the guy you know working on any projects for OU right now?

Interesting, if he's not too caught up in studies, I'm sure everyone here would love to hear his ideas.  Is there any software to simulate dynamically what's going on in the design?  I would love to see how Lenz Law works in this design.  I see a guest reading this thread, you should join!

Maxwell 3D?  That's one more dimension I can use.  ;)  I'll definitely check it out, and hopefully some others that are well-versed on it here can try to simulate this through that before I do.  Here's the FEMM file if anyone's interested...  Thanks for the help Omnibus.
