I read this with interest. having tested in Femm and building physical models of various types of magnetic gate, I always found a negative result, irrespective of magnet angle, shielding etc. I went back to this design of Beardon, to test his configuration again, unlike him however, I found again only dissapointing results. the mean of the torque results (and after all, this is what counts) were very close to zero ( in the order of 0.0004 Nm).

Anybody ever have any positive results with magnetic gates using shielding?

Femm is an interesting program, but actual experimentation is much better.  You can try more possiblities than Femm is capable of by using actual experimentation.  If the answer could be found through Femm, it most likely already would have been well known by now.  Mathmatical formulas and programs are more useful after the discovery is made through experimentation.

All of my physical models failed too until I tried the one that I could make work.

Hi,

Just so you all know, FEMME is an excellent program to help understand what the magnetic fields are doing but don't expect to design a working magnet motor with it. It uses the conservative portion of Maxwell's equations which means that no matter how you arrange the magnets in the program the torque will always integrate to 0. It is best suited to get a ballpark idea of what models could do. There are some ways that you can 'trick' it to give anomalous results but that can only happen when you are not using magnets in closed arrangements. Plus the fact that it can only simulate 2-dimensional setups is a limiting factor.
