subsequently translated into almost all written languages.
By 1913, over 40 million copies had been published,
which, at that time, was more than any literary venture had ever been attained, in the lifetime of an author.

The "impossible mission task".
When the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898, The President needed to send a message to General Garcia, but Garcia was somewhere among the mountainous jungles of Cuba, no one knew where. A man made of the right stuff was needed for the difficult and dangerous task of staying alive long enough to find Garcia and deliver the message.
Lieutenant Rowan will find Garcia for you, said president McKinley and then sent him at once on the mission all alone and unguarded. When the lieutenant landed on the island of Cuba in secret, after overcoming numerous obstacles, he finally reached Garcia, and incredibly, he made it back safely to the United States.
The trip involved many fortuitous circumstances. Very difficult hardships were on this mission. But that doesn't diminish the heroism of Lt. Rowan. If it was not for his courage, resourcefulness and sheer determination, and the drive he would not have gotten past the Cuban forces very far, much less accomplished mission impossible.
In a Message to Garcia, author Hubbard wrote, How the fellow by the name of Rowan took the letter, sealed it over his heart, in four days landed by night off the coast of Cuba from an open boat, disappeared into the jungle, and in three weeks came out on the other side of the Island, having traversed a hostile country on foot and delivered his letter to Garcia. Here was a rare man who had the ingredients for success that are needed everywhere.
Lt. Rowan immediately set out to do what he was asked to do and he did it. There were no excuses or foot-dragging. He didn't demand that someone furnish him with detailed plans of how to accomplish this assignment. He didn't hesitate. He didn't waste time. He didn't give up, although there were plenty of temptations to do so. He stayed focused on his goal, partly because he saw how it fit with a much larger goal. He was tough and tenacious.
Due partially to Rowan's success, the United States won the Spanish-American War.
The forward of the booklet says, For his fine moral character, rather than for his military prowess, that Lieutenant Rowan will always be remembered."

During the war between Russia and Japan, every Russian soldier who went to the front was given a copy of A Message To Garcia. The Japanese, finding the booklets in possession of Russian prisoners, concluded it must be a good thing and accordingly translated it into Japanese.
And on an order of the Mikado, a copy was given to every man in the employ of the Japanese Government, soldier or civilian."Here is a link to that original story..
