graphite paper - alufoil cell puts out 1.45 Volts 2 mA !
« on: October 24, 2008, 02:02:21 AM »
Hi All,

I succeeded now to make a new great galvanic cell.

The problem always was the graphite electrode.

I boughtnow lampblack powder and mixed this with
an acrylic binder and put it onto a paper towel.
So now I can make very big area graphite electrodes this
way, which do not dissolve in water solutions and still are very
good  conductive !

I then use K2CO3 and water as the electrolyte and
normal alufoil from the supermarket and this cell
generates 1.45 Volts and 2 mA shortcircuit current.

Now stack a few of these cells in series and you can light
up very nicely a few LEDs.

Surely the Alufoil is consumed after a while,
but this takes pretty long and this is a great battery
system not just for emergency cases.

Next I will try an urine battery with a new other electrode system
instead of the alufoil.

But the graphite electrode from lampblack and acrylic binder on
a paper towel is a great new electrode !

Just try it yourself.

Regards, Stefan.

I am a few days gone now on a small vaccations trip,
but when I return I will show this in new pictures and videos.

This graphite paper electrode is a really nice design.

Surely it has to be tested on a longer and larger scale,
but this way it is very easy to make.

Maybe this is also a way to mix in Nickel powder and have
cheap electrodes for fuel cells to convert H2 and O2 gases
directly to electrical energy.

Regards, Stefan.

Enjoy your vacation Stefan, hope you have a safe and fun trip.

You are going to be dreaming about this electrode design the whole time. LOL!

It's possible to make all the lampblack you want at home using a candle.triffid

I am in Italy right now.
Well, one could use a stack of 10x10 cm gaphite paper (lampblack) plate stacked
onto 10x10 cm alufoil next a 10x10 cm paper towel with K2CO3-water solution
and then again gaphite (lampblack) plate, etc..

If you stack about 34 of these cells over each other and build a series "tower"
cell like this you would get a voltage of 50 volts, so you could power about
24 to 25 white LEDs pretty nicely for quite long time.

Regards, Stefan.

for the conducting layer why not use colloidal graphite, it is called Aquadag. Just paint it on and let it dry. It is a very good conductor.
You can get it here:-

Mike, Stefan,   I realize your "graphite paper" is not the same graphite paper mentioned in today's news release http://www.newspostonline.com/sci-tech/scientists-find-novel-method-for-large-scale-production-of-nanomaterial-graphene-2008111113423 but it might still produce a certain fraction of graphene when soaked in hydrazine.

But now, scientists led by Yang Yang, a professor of materials science and engineering at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of engineering, scientists have developed a method in which graphite oxide paper is placed in a solution of pure hydrazine, which then turns graphite oxide paper into single-layer graphene.

Too expensive !
You can also produce colloidal graphite, when using the colloidal silver method by using
heated destilled water and use 2 graphite electrodes which are pulsed by about 30 Volts.
Then there will be nanosized graphite particles going into the water aftter an hour or more the water
will be black with all the particles...

The problem was, that you need a NON Water soluable electrode, so I just used
an acrylic binder with the graphite.
I will soon do the pics and videos when I am done with some other work,
that is more urgent right now for me.

Regards, Stefan.

Two interesting links. Easy homemade devices...

Charcoal Battery
  http://uk.geocities.com/nsc_zambia/experiments2004/em01_charcoal_battery.htm

Charcoal has got much too high resistance and is not much conductive.
So not much power there...
I tried this already earlier...

You must use very well conducting graphite.

Yes, this is the principle of a supercap.

Not to mention that charcoal is rather expensive, unless you know some cheap sources ( please post ) - also the production of charcoal causes the burning of fossil fuels unless the charcoal is from wood sources, in which case their burning trees.

Have any of you considered chimney dust?  It's basically soot - should me mostly carbon if you're using a propane fireplace.
