14 year old television starting up Question
« on: April 08, 2008, 12:22:27 AM »
I was recently watching an episode of America's Funniest Videos and someone recorded a 14 year old television starting up.  It sounded like a huge engine winding down.  Why would it make this noise?  I read somewhere that Steven Marks first thought about the TPU when he heard elder technicians talking about how dangerous televisions could be and that there was a story about a child that had been killed by an enormous amount of energy that came from the television set.  Anyway it's probably not related but I was wondering what would make that noise?

I did not see that show but know that some sets made a noise when the high voltage comes on.About 17000 volts worth(a crackling sound).Unually it would quiet down after the high voltage had built up.So it the set had been turned off for 14 years It's likely all the hv capacitors had no charge. Also if the capacitors had gone bad.The cans they are in might have warped as the charge built back up.Charged fields can stress the structures they are contained in.My guess is that the loud noise was made by a capacitor can warping when it was charged up after 14 years.triffid
