Wave Energy Generator
« on: December 15, 2014, 04:23:28 PM »
Hello,
My name is Jason Ballash. I am one of the co-founders of a newly formed group named KymoGen. We have recently designed a unique style of wave energy generator. We are very excited about how this system will provide clean, renewable energy to homes and communities that are near water. I am posting on these forums to gain awareness of our project, and to discuss any thoughts or suggestions on this project as we move forward.

We are now entering the early prototype phase, and we are very interested in your feedback throughout this project. If you would like to know more about the KymoGen, you can check out our initial press release below to learn more.  I will post more info once we get our prototype up and running.  Thank you all for your support.

Hi KymoGen1,
This technology are not new , in my country (Portugal) at 8 years this type of technology is tested in our coastal zone (Aveiro) but unfortunately  did not pursue the project. The project was being conducted by the University of Minho.
I think this kind of Technological can be very promising and very profitable.
I await more news.

Thanks

Great idea!
Some people use  it for the propulsion as well:

Thank you for your feedback and support! We also believe this technology is very promising, and our design will help prove that. It is shocking how much kinetic energy is stored in every wave. Even small waves contain tremendous potential. There are roughly 372,000 miles of coastline on this earth. Over 2.4 billion people live within 60 miles of a coastline. The energy is right on their doorsteps, just waiting to be harnessed.

I always wondered about how best to extract most of the energy from a wave. If you mount a buoy on a post the up and down motion is used and if you allow the buoy to shift side to side you capture another vector of the wave. In this case good show if it captures both.

A different man came up with the same idea about 5 years ago & tried to MANUFACTURE and sell them.
The PTB (Powers That Be) squelched him and his plan & he was never heard from again.

Broadly speaking, the PTB will NOT allow anything to interfere with their Big Oil MEGA PROFITS.

Yes, that design will work, but so will a million other designs. It is not hard AT ALL to pull power from the waves and tides. The real problems you have to overcome to make ANYTHING practical are:

Durability and maintenance.
    - Will it hold up to the abuse of the ocean. Impact forces (day to day and storms), vibration, corrosion (salt water!), sea life, temperature changes, UV, etc...
-Metal, seals, valves, cables, bearings, etc...
-How much maintenance is needed in it's life time to keep it operational?
-Replacing parts, paint/coatings, cleaning sea life off, labor, inspection, etc...

Cost of construction and return on investment (ROI)
-Will it produce enough revenue from it's power to pay the monthly loan payments (interest and principle) for constitution, ongoing maintenance, etc..
-And still produce enough revenue to make it equal or more profitable than conventional power?
-And, can it pay it's loan off before it has to be completely replaced?

Efficiency.
How efficient is it as harvesting the potential available energy?  Up/down, left/right, forward/back, etc...
-For example, your design only captures the vertical lift(up/down) of the waves which is one of the smallest forces in wave energy, and your not even getting all of it.
-There is more energy in the horizontal directions than vertical too.

Environmental impact.
-Will seaweed get caught on the devise, will whales hurt themselves on the wire or cables, how will the sea floor be impacted by any base, will it block sun light from reaching sea life that needs it, etc...

Transporting to the Grid.
-How will the power get from your device(s) to the grid.
    - How much loss will there be to transport it? Wire loss, connection losses, etc...
    - Can you place your system close enough to major power hubs (cities etc...), or do you need specific locations that have annually consistent conditions (wave heights or currents year round) etc..

These are the real problems that need to be overcome.

Well, screw the powers that be. In a few decades there won't be any oil anymore, nor uranium. the degenerate elite will soon have to burn their money for fuel...

Wave energy is great. Some designs are rather mainenance-free and enduring. For instance, a concrete chamber, fixed to the ground, the waves will continously cause under and overpressure, which drives a wind turbine. One chamber of like 10x10m can power a small village. Construction isn't much harder than a concrete peer, plus a wind mill.

Besides, where there are waves, there usually is also wind...

Hello,
Jason from KymoGen here. I just wanted to update this post, as we we move forward with our wave energy generator. We have been working around the clock to get this project going, and it looks like we should be able to start building the prototype in the spring. We will be posting our project on Kickstarter in a few days, to raise funding so we can use the best materials materials and components available on the prototype, and also test the unit in water. Here is a link to our new press release, complete with video!http://www.prlog.org/12431296-kymogen-wave-energy-moving-forward.html. Please feel free to contact us with any questions about our project. Feedback is always welcome. Thanks again.

Hey everyone!
Jason from KymoGen here again. Just wanted to post another on our project, as we hit some milestones. This morning, we went live with our Kickstarter campaign. I will post a link below for anyone interested in checking it out. We are very excited, as in 30 days, the Kickstarter will be complete, and we can begin building the first prototype KymoGen. I also wanted to thank you all for all of the support and feedback you have shown. We really appreciate it.

How much energy you are planning to generate from one unit like this?
Best regards

All due respect to the people developing this idea, but....

This is a scam! It may be a legitimate attempt but everything about this idea is hype, and hype only! If they would put the same amount of work into r&d instead of wordy, vague promotions they might actually get something new. They have not made any claims of new ideas, or responded to the constructive feed back given.

I listed out the true hurtles to this type of tech and they haven't address any of it anywhere. Now they are asking for money. Red flag.

Again, I'm trying to help and not make waives  (pun intended). Facts are facts.

Good luck!
