Not sure if it's been mentioned/tried before or if it's even possible. I don't know much about the joule theif circuit other than it lets you squeeze the last little bit of juice out of dead batteries.

With that in mind, can it be scaled up to work with say a bank of deep cycle 12v batteries in the 48-72v range? Will it damage the batteries to the point they can't be recharged?

This could possibly be a HUGE jump in the range of electric vehicles using standard lead acid batteries as long as it doesn't permanently discharge them. Not sure if the other battery technologies have similar drawbacks where they don't fully discharge before being considered dead. If a joule theif can work its magic on all battery types, then lithium battery packs should see a significant increase in performance.

Anyone have an old laptop with a lithium battery that can test? Bascially run it down to the point the laptop shuts off then add a joule theif and see if you can power back up and how long it will last, then recharge and run from joule theif the entire duration and compare the time.

As far as I know , no one has made a JT big enough to do what you are talking about.....

Yes a JT could be used on an electric car........ It is said that it takes 20 or 30 charge cycles to condition a lead acid battery......after it is conditioned it will charge faster and have a few % more output.

I do not think that a  lithium battery will benefit as much..... I understand the primary cause of  lithium battery failure is cracking near the anode,  The  lithium expands as it charges then cracks as it is discharged......once there are to many cracks the battery is useless.

If I was going to try running a car like you describe I would work on making a BIG JT Ringer..........then adapt it to work as a charger
A good sized ringer on each running  battery fed by pulses from an additional battery might extend the range quite a bit.

gary

Edit

the ability of a JT to extract more power from so called dead batterys will not help with electric cars.....in general if you drain  a lead acid battery below 10.5V you are damaging it.
Sometimes charging  the battery with a JT will recondition it..........but it is probably wise to stay in the safe zone.

It is possible with improved electronics - not the standard 2N2222 type Joule Thief.

One group trained by me some months ago said that they found a "commercial resonance condition" and they could recharge banks of 12V lead-acid batteries.  Please read the theory and my simple proof-of-concept experiments at overunityresearch.com - the ltseung888 bench.

You can also check the Patrick Kelly eBook Chapter 5.  He confirmed that he could recharge 12V batteries with a 1.5V AA battery - but worked best with 6V ones.  It is a matter of tuning.

Study the xls files.  Some showed negative COP.  Both the Input or Output Average Power can be negative.  That fact alone indicates "recharging circuits" with energy coming from the environment.  I used the term lead-out or bring-in energy.

May God Guide us all.

What your talking about has been done and is proven. Look up Bob Boyce. He used a programable mosfet module running on a 12v battery, programed to get high frequency narrow 12v pulses of curent through the module FET's to a hand wound LARGE torroid ferrite transformer. The narrow switched pulses flow through the primay winding, magnetizing the whole torroid. When the pulse switches off, the magnetism collapses, inducing a HV spike (back EMF), which he rectifies with diodes and  sends right back into the batttery. The cycle repeates.  A volt meter shows the large batery voltage rising as you watch the video. The battery powered a small toy electric jeep which his daughter was photographed driving around. Interestingly, the programable FET module is probably not needed.  Joule ringer primary... ie... 2n2955 self oscillating with the JR primary is probably all you need to do the exact same thing, without a module, nor any programing. I believe it might work because JT self oscillation is fairly fast, and fast = narow. Seems to me, the bigger the ferrite core, the bigger the output. Dont be confused by Bob. Bob Boyce used 3 parallel paths of current. Joule ringer only has one path, but works the same way. Then again, more parallel paths, more output? What ever works best, you would probably need one Joule Ringer for each Battery in the electric car. But they're cheap enough to build.  You might need to stop the car, pull over after driving, and wait for the bateries to self charge for a little while before continuing. lol

The SG Oscillator by J Bedini is a good example also.... No overcharging occurs  and when used with alum batteries is much better as you can discharge the 10.5 v limit
There are new type of hybrid cap/battery combined in a cell so the JT / SG oscillator is a plus factor so 3 in 1 battery cell
